I have a virtual install of windows on virtualbox. I am going to see how many freeware downloads and subsequent viruses it takes to get a blue screen. I will keep you posted.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but you're probably not going BSOD XP that way. The most common viruses out there seem content to wreak havoc in user mode, and the only user mode process that can BSOD the system is winlogon if it dies. Still, it could be fun to watch your system slowly disintegrate and see if you figure out what hooked into where and see if you can piece it back together.
Now, if you find some viruses that using badly-written drivers you *might* have a chance at a BSOD. Don't know how hard that will be to find.
For a good time that doesn't involve traversing unsafe websites, download and run NotMyFault from here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963901.aspx
That's a good way to learn what can cause a system crash and why.

Never got BSOD on XP, or any software-induced fatal crashes in general... Am I doing something wrong? ;)

i have had several BSODs after installing antivirus software but then i have had some crashes of linux. vista BSOD's less often but just seems to suddenly go extremely slowly instead.
to me it seems that the linux kernel tries harder in the event of an error while windows just gives up. if you aren't crashed enough not to be able to display a blue screen shouldn't you be able to recover from the crash (or at least try) :)

i usually find that once you get infected once, subsequent infections are quick to follow even if you don't do anything.
