View Full Version : ReactOS - a viable choice to bypass instructor stupidity?

So, some idiot at my school decided "Hey! *insert stupid hu-he-hur-he laugh here* Why don't we use a closed-source, Windows-only application to teach our kids biology!" I won't mention the app; not important. What is important is to find out whether it would be worth trying out ReactOS for this.
I've been keeping an eye on the project and it's gone quite far. I'm thinking of giving it a few GB on my laptop to run this program and a few old games I have (Roller Coaster Tycoon - the original!).
Has anyone else checked it out recently and think it'd be worth doing over, say, Wine or a questionably-legitimate copy of XP in VirtualBox?

It is unstable, don't use it for serious use.
Wine is better, if that fails, use Windows (real or VM)

You could try to run ReactOS in a virutal machine, I remember seeing a vmware player image available for download. If that doesn't work there is always wine

I have used ReactOS, it isn't ready yet for use. I notable achievement, but not stable yet.

I hve tried it a few times, but it always decides it doesn't like me and doesn't boot.

ReactOS for normal use, crap. utter balls right now. but that is to be expected, it is still alpha, even ubuntu is utter balls when its early in its development cycle. give it a year or two and it will be better, its a big task. but wine should produce the same functionality, if that doesn't work then it probably won't run in react OS either.

ReactOS doesn't do much now, but I think it's supposed to go beta sometime later this year. Maybe it will be suitable then.

i wouldn't hold your breath.
but saying this i sound really negative about the project, i fully support it, i think its a great idea. i even have it installed. though i do preffer the WINE compatability layer, no need for dual boots.
