Is there a virtual machine program for free that i can use on windows xp?

You can get VMWare Player for free, it can only use pre-created images though. Microsoft Virtual PC is also free, it can create images, but it doesn't play very nice with Linux.

virtual box is best for home use (but for servers definitely vmware)

i just dont get why anyone running a server would need to run a vm....aren't servers supposed to be "look but don't touch"?

Because it allows you to run many virtual servers on one physical box.

it allows me to run multiple VM's on the big noisy server i keep downstairs while i'm upstairs and my laptop is both quiet and not overheating :)i just dont get why anyone running a server would need to run a vm....aren't servers supposed to be "look but don't touch"?

VMware Server is also free for Windoze.
