"For this, I highly recommend getting Ubuntu Linux. A sleek live CD implementation of Linux with a lot of bells and whistles that make it very attractive to first time users. The geekiest thing you need to do here is to enable your computer to boot-up from your CD/DVD drive. This is quick and painless.
The next method requires more technical competency than the first one above. This setup allows you to install two operating systems on your computer. This is called dual-booting. Dual-booting does not mean running two operating systems at the same time (well, that is for another article on virtual computing environment such as VirtualPC and Xen) but it means being able to select from two (or more) OS at boot time. Before you do this, make sure that you know how to partition your computer's hard drive and also be able to figure out what MBR stands for (Master Boot Record). For dual-boot systems, I often recommend having a separate data partition that you can share between the installed operating systems. What is the recommended Linux distribution for this? I'd say Ubuntu Linux again!"
