Here's the article : http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Windows/Microsoft-Windows-XP-Dies-June-30-as-Planned/

This is gonna give other OSes a boost as there are not much takers for Vista :)

Maybe, maybe on a personal level, yes, but I don't think Vista will lose in businesses. Unfortunately, business with many users must adapt to the next Windows release. It's happening now, even in places that were otherwise slow to adopt it.

Imagine a corporation choosing to rebuild its entire IT structure to ditch Windows. I can't imagine the reaction of all the users who can barely hand the old familiar Windows. Plus they'd have to deal with substitute applications or try to get others to run on WINE. Even the IT staff might be hosed... they'd have to get people who actually know how to use Linux.

I don't think it's impossible, but it's something that will have to be planned for and introduced over a period of maybe years. Microsoft isn't going to lose their grip just yet.

If a corporation hasn't switched yet than they're waiting for XP to get a little closer to 'non-support' before migrating. Hopefully by then they'll be more viable alternatives than Vista Ultimate or Vista Business....

I don't know of any corporations that have migrated yet. It may be the field I am in but the majority of what I am seeing is that they are skipping Vista and paying to continue support on an enterprise level for another year or so.

My company is skipping Vista for our product support and on the office desktop. Our products are going to use Server 2008, the architect has already decided that. And our CTO has said we're not going to Vista on the desktop. The reason, that he didn't say but the IT people told me is because they'd have to upgrade almost 90% of the desktops or about 1800 computers because most systems are only Cel 2.4 with 512MB and integrated video. Definitely not prime Vista PC candidates for sure.

I'm sure my company isn't the only one with that dilemma. Pay huge amounts of money to upgrade or replace desktops plus the cost of Vista licenses and financially it's not looking viable for some businesses.

We recently got new computers at my place of work. They were all new Dells with the Windows Vista stickers on them. Funny thing was that the IT department wiped them clean and installed XP before they sent them out to the individual stores.

Big problem with Vista is that MANY legacy application will not be able to run in Vista.

My company is playing with the idea of Linux + OO......I see OO doesn't have a ms-project alternative yet..........we have many MSProject files around the office that will either need to be ditched for another alternative or find a new way....

There are many variables that will lock corporations into a MS solution, one being the proprietary files which can't be opened by another product, like MS Project. We are an AS/400 shop, there are no TRUE compatible products to run a 5250 (aks, mainframe type screen)

Not. Going. To. Happen.

Look to Win98SE.

Personally, I don't know a single person or IT department who has willingly gone to Vista. Those who do have Vista got the OS pre-installed and even then want XP instead.

Excuse me, by "other OSes", I meant Linux, OS X etc. not Vista.
