Right
I have an old TP 600 with a 300Mhz cpu 2MB video and 230MB RAM
The graphics card and sound WILL NOT work with Linux, (don't think I, and other people from my LUG have'nt tried)
Anyhoo,
WIndows 2000 pro it is then
Problem is with that little power, it struggles to run more than one app at a time, esspecially with wireless.
SO...
What apps can people recomend?
Opera instead of Firefox?
I also need a media library.
anything else?
Doesnt need to be FOSS, freeware will do.

You may like to have a Registry Cleaner. You can get one for free at http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_cleaner/registry_cleaner.htm.

Something from the Winamp 2 series is probably going to be your best bet at a media player, though it will lack library features. Hit up http://www.oldversion.com/ to get it.

Foxit PDF Viewer. Adobe's reader is just one bunch of bloatware...

try any of these you want, they are free, and you don't even have to install, they will run off an .exe file on the desktop, or there is a package to install a load of them with, very useful for usb flash drives also:

btw, have you tried puppylinux on that machine?

XMPlay is a tiny (300k) media player that can handle most formats and even had a built-in media library... link: http://www.un4seen.com/

What is the graphics card? If you don't want Linux on it, thats cool too.
First, remove any antivirus you have. It eats RAM.
Create a limited account for use, don't use the admin account for non admin work.
Use this firewall: http://www.ghostsecurity.com/ghostwall/
Opera is the best browser (shameful of me, I know, but you asked for it). I would recommend against Firefox.
This browser is also good, probably faster than Opera for that machine: http://www.avantbrowser.com/
As mentioned before, get another PDF reader, Sumatra is good enough.
For media, I use VLC. http://www.videolan.org/ I don't know its requirements, but it can handle anything that I have ever seen.
