Desktop Effects Broken!!!! :'(

I've been using ubuntu for about 4 months. A month ago my system started to go into "Low Graphics Mode", as the problem progressed, it occured more often and soon I began to worry. I switched my graphics driver to NV, which solved that problem, but now when i try to enable desktop effects it says I need a restricted driver. When I activate the driver, the desktop effects are still not functional and when I go to the screen saver settings or the screen saver engages Ubuntu logged me out. This problem was fixed by disableing the restricted driver.

I have the same "problem" i have installed the latewst nvidia driver (via ENVY).

It seems that i i leave the computer over the night desktop effect will be set to none.

(perhaps the grahipccard was overheated? but i don't know how to tell.)

have a 8800 GTS running Hardy H.
