Congrats! I'm fairly new to Ubuntu 7.10, but enjoying the experience - :)
Plenty of 'online' help - e.g. check out the Community Support (http://www.ubuntu.com/support/CommunitySupport) page & links; also, I found the book below quite helpful for a beginner.
The Synaptic Package Manager under the System->Administration menu provides a list of downloads for your Ubuntu system - just do a re-load to update the list and check out the offerings; and search or ask the forum for advice on using this module, if you are uncertain.
Finally, you might want to define your needs, e.g. audiovisual, games, et al - plenty of great experience here - good luck!

Add/Remove... in the menu is the easiest way to start.
As mentioned - Synaptic Package Manager is a good general tool.
If you are looking for applications to do something specific - just ask.
