Hi,
I am relativity new to Linux although I have been using Ubuntu for about a year now. But now after getting through all the cool default things I want something to really add a personal flare to my system with things that I find useful and appealing. But the problem is I don't really know what is out there and a lot of the technical talk has me stumped. So I am asking EVERYONE for suggestions! Anything you have in programs, art work, anything. I am a sucker for very finished streamlined things, (Beryl is very appealing to me to give you an idea :) ) I am asking here because I know this board is where I will find the best of the best so just give me what you have. ANYTHING is welcome and I will look at everything you give me.
Thanks for making Open Source ROCK for former "windows users" like me.

Try looking on gnome-look.org. Also, if you want to make your own, try out GIMP (it is included on the default install).

Another good website is art.gnome.org... You said you like Beryl, why not install Compiz Fusion? Or are you already using it?

You are already using it if you use Ubuntu 7.10+

Sorry Guys I wasn't too clear about what I am doing. I have all the desktop themes and everything I need. I am talking about stuff like widgets, or how i might go about making splash screens or things like that so that I can really personalize them and so that if I turn on my computer people look and say WOW WHATS THAT! I have beryl and my desktop effects and everything, but I want to make some of my own stuff any tips or programs that I should acquire if I would like to go about this. Plus I just want suggestions on ANY KIND of program you think is cool whether it be CD burning or email. For example until someone told me about songbird I was not satisfied with anything but (ugh) iTunes. Things like that, so that i can completely devote my hard drive to Ubuntu and not have windows on there too. (Sorry if this seems a little jumbled, no sleep makes me a bit spastic in my thoughts lol)
Thanks,
A.

I would suggest Splashy for bootsplash. Also, Widgets? Just get screenlets and look at the different ones to see how their coded.

Splashy is available here (http://splashy.alioth.debian.org/wiki/), and you can learn how to customize themes using the guide in my sig (which is what controls the widgets in your window).

It should install fine in Hardy. Just download the deb package and double click to install it. it doesn't do icons or anything like that, it is just a bootsplash.
