I've been fighting with inkscape for a ridiculous amount of time for how simple this should be. All I want is to be able to grab one handle on a node (to control the ark between two points on a segment) and adjust it without adjusting the opposite handle for the same node at the same time.

What I have:
(h)-------------[N]------------------------------------(h)

What I want:

(h)
\
\
\
[N]------------------------------------------(h)

does anybody know how to do this?
sorry if it didn't come out as a question, I realized later that I hadn't specifically asked for instructions, just complained about it not behaving how I wanted it to.

if someone knows, please let me know.

You mean like this?

Tick "Make selected nodes corner".

Select the node and try holding down Shift or Ctrl. Is that what you want ?
Curves can be a bit of a problem!

Actually, just press shift+c while the node is selected, and you will be able to do this.

Making it a corner seems to be exactly what I wanted. Thanks!
