Look what I have done...

I sacrificed my marvelous Ubuntu 7.10 installation on my PackardBell laptop for a quick try of the preinstalled Windows vista that came with the laptop.

I will post here daily to keep you informed on how well I am doing.
Maybe some of my ideas will help Ubuntu,no?;-)

Day 1-So far,I miss my lovely Ubuntu 7.10.Windows vista moves agonizingly slow.It takes double of the time Ubuntu took to boot up,and the oh-so-great aero interface feels slooooooow.winamp doesn't get up to the par with exaile, and I hate the queue function. In exaile i just right-clicked the track and selected queue. In winamp I found no such conveniency.

Also,I hate the need to have an antivirus. But,on the good side,I love Yahoo messenger for windows vista, altough it moves a bit slow.I am simply amazed by vista's games compared to those of windows xp.

But,it doesn't become up to the par with Ubuntu. If I went back to Ubuntu right now,the only thing I'd want was a stylish interface(i have to admit it,Vista looks pretty good)Ubuntu's Human theme doesn't look anything like it,but I do hope the new theme for 8.04 or 8.10 will balance this point.

I'll keep you informed ;-)

ok,didn't knew about the winamp thing :-D thanks

ok,now I do miss something: preinstalled applications...i could've done much more in the time i used to install office and other things i needed.

also,i do miss synaptic.

but I still like the *Default* look of vista ;-)except for a glitch: when maximizing a window,it loses it's transparency

Using Home Premium edition by the way :-D

Day 2: Okay,I`m starting to get used to Vista's sluggishness,in the sense that it doesn't feel as slow as it was after installing....of course, that's until I start installing something with Yahoo Messenger,Avira Antivir and Winamp started.

I am starting to miss Exaile's sudden exits, with no errors.Winamp never crashed until now,and Exaile would have crashed 5-6 times.(Note: Despite of it's crashes,I still consider Exaile a superbe music player for a program made by enthusiast ;-) )

Another feature that Vista needs is Workspaces...My desktop gets filled in 10-15 minutes from logging on,and I do need some way to organise it.

I don't know how/why,but I'm starting to get comfortable with Vista(altough I booted from a Ubuntu LiveCD this morning, and it felt super-mega-turbo-charged fast compared to vista)
I do hate the Windows Update thingy, but oh well,it's windows after all

I'll keep you informed ;-)

i think the ubuntu gnome enviroment with avant window and compiz is so much better than vista's aero. you shoudl check out some youTube videos of compiz/beryl with avant window manager or just keyword search ubuntu beryl...there are desktop themes than aero best of luck

I think ubuntu is wayy beter than windoze.
with the looks, i agree that vista's default is better than the default human theme for ubuntu, but in ubuntu u can make it look however u want so :P I especially like compiz fusion, its looks good :)
And i dont know how i could live without multiple virtual desktops

That sounds familiar. It does seem a lot faster after a while. Maybe it's doing a lot of indexing and the HD is probably a bit fragmented after generating all the setup files during the install. Also it gets better when you learn to tweak it and uninstall some of the junk. It takes a bit of learning to get that sussed - mind you I've had years to learn what I do and don't want in XP, Arch and Ubuntu by comparison!

Vista will be quicker after a while, because it'll have everything it wants to index...indexed! :D

And I quite like the Vista interface, and I don't think losing transparency when maximized is a glitch ;) It's always been like that (had it on a pc since beta 2 ;))

ckien: Prior to trying this,i had a WONDERFUL Compiz+AWN+Ubuntu desktop, but I wanted to see how vista was after 1 year...

I KNOW that I CAN change the appearance, and make it look extracool, but I was talking about the DEFAULT appearance. That's what I hate about the linux community in general(no offense, but that`s true) Linux users don't care about how the default desktop looks, because THEY can change it to suit their likings.A newbie doesn't know that he can do that. And sincerely,Ubuntu's default theme looks....well....not pretty.

I feel that the linux desktop misses one thing that windows has: consistency.Yes,linux is a great Operating System, far more advanced than winblows, but it needs a visual refresh.

Overall,I miss linux, and I would choose ubuntu over any winblow version all the times. But,let's see how vista behaves untill the end of the week,to talk about what it felt like, okay? :-)

One thing I noticed today: Vista's boot up process sucks. In Ubuntu,as soon as I logged on,I could start any program I'd like with no loss in response speed, without having to wait for the system to load the startup apps.In vista,I must wait 1-2 minutes after the 3-4 minutes boot process to really start working...+1 for Ubuntu ;-)

Okay...Now I hate Vista

End of the week..at last...

No more sluggishness (yeah,it felt sluggish the last 2 days)
No more random losing of wireless connection(i hate having to wait half an hour for vista to reconnect)
No more applications crashing
No more stress searching for the internet for a free burning rom app like K3b
No more waiting 5-10 minutes for my laptop to boot(Back to Ubuntu wich boots in 1 minute :-> )
No more having to fool around with apps that stress you for a restart
No more having to wait for 1-3 minutes after logon to actually start working
No more...
I can't take it...Maybe it's just me,but Ubuntu is way better in performance than Vista,at least on my laptop(wich IS Vista Capable)

But I liked some things at Vista:
-The effects, altough not many, are subtle and are made to be kinda useful on the eyes(glassy windows, anyone?)
I know I CAN do this and MUCH BETTER in Ubuntu with Compiz, but get over it.I ain't talking about what I CAN,I'm talking about what really matters for a newbie: THE DEFAULTS.

Yes,Gutsy's default effects are great, not too interfeering, but the theme could be changed(My eyes aren't really that comfortable with that shade of orange, but it's supposed to be fixed in Intrepid Ibex anyway )

And,other things that I liked about vista:
-The way it's theme goes with nature wallpapers(i love them): Simply Stunning.
-The sound scheme(I really liked that, and I'm considering to make my Ubuntu Vista-like,including sounds!)
-The Sidebar(It's really nice to have a clock, some images and weather on the desktop, but only if it ain't a memory hog.Between this and AWN,I'd choose the latter anytime)
-I actually loved the SEARCH. Micro$ really got it right with this :D

And...that's all.
Actually, apart from the cosmetics and the GREAT search system,I don't really see any reason to use vista.
Ubuntu needs to work,in my opinion,at the default looks and at the search. In rest,it beats vista no-time.

I said this, and i'll say it as long as i'll be here: I KNOW I CAN change the DEFAULT looks to suit me,or to look comfortable to the eyes.BUT a NEWBIE(These are the guys we want >:) )DON'T.I saw a suggestion on Brainstorm that I think should work gracefully:

On logon,Ubuntu should present a dialog asking the user to choose from (let's say 3) themes:
-The original,"Human" one
-A Blue,sea-themed one
-A Crystal-clear,(I don't wanna say it but...)Vista like theme.I ain't saying that this should be a exact copy of the vista theme, but more of an human variation with glass effects(could be accomplished by Compiz+Emerald Combo)

Well..that was my adventure...I saw vista before, then I saw the light of ubuntu, and i went back to vista, saw only hell, and rushed out to the paradise of Open-Source,Security,Fun and No-error land of Ubuntu

Thanks to all for reading me,and thanks for the Open Source and Ubuntu dev's for giving us a totally great alternative to Windows(TM)(R)(C) that could beat it in almost any cases,hands-down.

:guitar: You ROCK! :guitar:

Unfortunately the default options can't please everyone. I personally don't like it that much either, but at the end of the day it doesnt take more than a few clicks: System -> Preferences -> Appearance / Advanced Desktop Effects.
Windows advertises its best features (such as aero etc) but a lot of machines fail to achieve the specs necessary, or run very poorly - which then require downgrading to a kind of ugly Vista Basic.
Ubuntu's default will run beautifully on nearly anything, and it then has the options available to deliver significantly better effects than aero - if the user wishes.
Personally Id prefer an OS that delivers on what it advertises.
