Why does ubuntu use such a boring font for the system. Infact pretty much every linux that i have ever used or seen uses the same font.
I think that a new font should be designed for ubuntu to use in the next ubuntu (8.10 or whatever) to go with the new theme planned.
(Also, i hope they use a betterfont rendering system to make them as sharp as windows fonts)

They use it because it is functional. The font shouldn't be decortive imo, as that distracts from the usability of the theme.

Wait, are you being sarcastic or serious?
If you are being sarcastic then I agree with the fact that it doesn't distract from the usability of the theme.
If you are being seriousn then i dissagree with the fact that it does distract from the usability of the theme.

I am being serious. The font the theme uses should not be decortive because it needs to be nice to read. For example, you wouldn't use ubuntu's font for your theme's font, as that would distract from readability. The font it uses now works good though, as it doesn't distract and yet is very clear.

True.
But if they want to change fonts I think the Liberation fonts would fit the bill.

+1 most definately!!
Anyone not tried these fonts should download from gnome-look (red Hat Liberation fonts), personally think these are better than ubuntu's default font with out being to fancy. Very Clean!!

Tomatz, malayalam is an indic font.
I'm not certain but chances are pango is rolling back to it's default sans serif font for latin characters.

Well it doesn't look like sans or any font i've seen.
Which font is it reverting to then?
[edit] Ahhh it is sans-serif it just looks so different on a black background. Weird that i didn't notice though?
