View Full Version : Vinyl Ubuntu Stickers: Good Idea or Fanaticism Gone Awry?

Hello everyone!

I wanted to get some feedback on a little crazy idea I had. You know how every time you pass a Volkswagen you have roughly a 35% chance of seeing those white Apple logo decals that come inside the box of every Mac sold?

Well, I got to thinking...maybe that isn't such a bad idea.

Attached you will see my first attempt at doing the same thing for Ubuntu. The logo lends itself extremely well to single color formatting, and I think the result turned out nicely.

Now I am by no means a professional at this (I am the IT guy for a snowboard company and I used our vinyl machine) sort of thing, but I wanted to gauge interest in the community and to even see if anyone else thought it was a remotely good idea. IMO, the more of a chance we have to get out there on the front lines and get exposure, the better.

So what do you think? Is wearing your OS on your sleeve a little to fanboy? Is this something you would slap on your laptop, car, bike, helmet, naked nether-regions? Or would you groan in disapproval as you passed by someone who had one of these affixed to their vehicles posterior?

If enough people are interested, maybe we can contact a company about making a bunch or something. Just a thought.

I love it! And you are right, the all-white version looks good and is easily identifiable to what it is (for those who know what it is).

I have a blue convertible with no bumperstickers on it. I think this would show up wonderfully on it.

What does it take to make one of these?

A little tech evangelism never hurt anyone.
The key would be of course making profits from sticker sales go to Canonical or some other supportive association.

Agreed.

I wanted to get the word out on these and I am finding out from Canonical if its even something we can produce on our own in the first place.

If there is a problem with the trademark, I can always just post a HOW-TO of it, but its access to the materials that is the tough piece.

@Dragonbite
These were made with a vinyl cutter we use in house to create logos and branding to send to our sponsored riders. Someone happened to leave their computer unlocked (FOR SHAME) and I may have sat down at it for a few minutes, downloaded the logo, and ran off five before anyone came back.

I also did a two-color logo of a particular candidate running for president who uses iconography in their literature :) I HATE tearing off paper bumper stickers.

Pretty awesome idea
I actually do this already kinda, except with my guitar, it has one of the stickers that come with the ship-it CDs on the body, between the pickups, looks awesome, (althou starting to get a little grubby after a couple of years playing...)

I think it's a fantastic idea, could do it in the Ubuntu colors or plain white.

I always thought the apple sticker came with the VW!

That ubuntu sticker looks good though, that would be awesome to sport on my truck. And even on my bike helmet!

This keyboard (http://www.zareason.com/shop/product.php?productid=16162&cat=0&page=1) already has that.

Umm, pardon me for saying this - and while I love the idea of the Ubuntu logo on my auto - but part of the spirit of Ubuntu is the multi-ethnic/multi-racial, pan-global concept that is evoked by the use of multiple colors. That is lost in the all-white logo. Apple gets away with it because we see the apple, and think red ... or green ... or whatever, but it the apple is one color and works without color because we all see apples in the color that we want. The ubuntu logo needs the contrast to really work.

Again, pardon me for my humble opinion, but that is my opnion.

I can appreciate your concerns, but firstly you must assume that anyone who doesn't "get" the logo is going to have it explained to the person who is clarifying it. Its also assumptive that the person doing the explaining is even actually aware of the intricacies of the logo, considering much of the "purpose" behind the logo is lost on the public at large whenever it leaves the confines of those who take it to heart.

Another factor to consider is the cost/benefit analysis of production. Vinyl cuts in and of themselves are inherently costlier to produce, and generally are monochromatic. For every additional layer of color you wish to produce, you are doubling your cost of materials and exponentially increasing the time of production.

All in all, most people are going to ask "What is Ubuntu?" versus "Can you explain the logo further, or why it is designed as such?" There is a much more enriching story behind the open source movement that represents Ubuntu and Linux than there is behind the ideology of the logo color choices themselves. Furthermore, explaining what Ubuntu means (insofar as why it was chosen as a name when asked "Why Ubuntu") is going to be far more gratifying for the evangelist as well as the questioner in the long run.

Sorry for the long winded answer, but I had actually considered this before producing my first one :)

Still awaiting a reply from them, but I don't think it will be a problem :)

It looks like this idea is being received well. Once I hear back, I'll post more info.

I think this is a great idea. I would buy a few if they came out with them. And if you figure Canonical is able to make them for say even 50 cents a piece and sells them for a dollar. And there are 1 million users out there that buy it that's 500,000 bucks they can use.

It's kinda like a bake sale. Non-Profit organizations still need money.

ohhh... We could get Pillsbury to make the cookies that come in a tube, but have the Ubuntu Logo on them!

Okay, yeah, that's not gonna happen...unless someone on this thread happens to be a Pillsbury exec.

I would love one for the Laptop!!!
Already scrapped the Windows sticker that ususally comes with the machines.
Great idea

Well, I would say that we already have a small cross-section of users interested in this idea. Barring any issue with Canonical (I have yet to receive a response after several days), I will track down a company and see what kind of cost we can get for something like this.

Thanks for the feedback, and if you have any ideas/comments keep 'em coming!

If possible will there be color (I know they will be more expensive)?
depending on the price I would be willing to pay the difference

I'm definitely going to attempt to get as much information on as many options as possible. I'm by no means a vinyl expert, but I know that there are a plethora of colors to choose from.

I will also be getting a quote on full, three-color cuts...though I expect those to be somewhat extravagantly priced.

But it looks like a great place to have it distributed from. Heck, I like the padded messenger bag (just don't like the USD price!)

I have some to the merch for the store and it's great. There just isn't much selection

What I want is an hoodie with
(_)Ubuntu
Linux for Human Beings
on the front centered ( (_) is the ubuntu logo)
and the Ubuntu Logo on the right side of the hood.

alright, sweet!
another thing that i was thinking is you know how you'll get the sticker for your computer that you stick on it that says windoz and stuff. ubuntu should send one of those too so you can replace the windoz sticker with the ubuntu one :)

just a thought

Oh, and don't forget System76 offers free (paper) stickers to put on your laptop or computer to replace the "Disigned for Windows XP.." stickers.

Just send a self-addressed stamped envelope.

But I like this vinyl idea, and I'm not one to put stickers on my car!

I'm also not one for stickers on my car, but this could change that. I would definitely get one, and look forward to when they are produced.

Especially the single color one is unobtrusive, but still looks good. And it will show up better on a wider range of colors.
