i have gsnes9x but i want to make it better or get a better emulator

In my experience, ZSNES is every bit as fast, stable, and compatible on Ubuntu as it is on Windows. Unfortunately, its interface is also every bit as fugly on Linux as it is on Windows, but if you can live with that, it's your best bet.

i have installed zsnes but when it opens it closes as soon as it opens

I use ZSNES, too.

@timetoballj: try starting ZSNES from a terminal (zsnes). That should give you some output as to why it won't run. The most common reason is that when the emulator first runs, it's supposed to create a directory called mcop and fails: you can create it manually instead if this happens. There are several threads in this forum on this if you search.
