Hi,
I have a copy of this photo at home - with the people in it.
My question is this: what is the best method to fix the attached photo? The upper half is much darker than the lower half. Any suggestions?
Thank you.

The gradient tool in the GIMP may help. Check out Meet The Gimp (http://meetthegimp.org/) podcasts or google gradient howto's to learn how to do so.

With a retangle select I'd surround the area I'd like to change then >colors>brightness-contrast and adjust it from there.(Make a copy and cut out the white space first)
