Nethack! If you don't like the ASCII "graphics" you can use a graphical frontend. I personally prefer the original text visuals.
ADOM is quite nice, too, but it isn't open source.

WoW?
NOT A LINUX/OPEN SOURCE GAME - Why do people keep saying this game here??? It's not even close to what he asked for
Battle of Wesnoth is more RTS than you're looking for but it's the best option. There's also Heroes of Might and Magic 3 from the old Loki games, but you'll have to find that somewhere.

KQ, and ultima 7: serpent isle / black gate with exult engine.
Both of the original ultima 7's can be downloaded for free (and yes, it's legal) from this great site: http://www.abandonia.com
Have fun

Even more amazing is the notion that people feel that they should recommend it and that someone on this planet hasn't heard of WoW. I don't believe you can find such a person. Not even from the deaf community.
Anyway, you should go ahead and check out Diablo II.
Seriously, Adonthell isn't bad. It's like the SNES Final Fantasies though (purposefully).
I second the Ultimas as well. They're amazing. Exult would fulfill the open source part of what you were asking for but its development is slow as... it's not stopped, it just hasn't been updated much.

I loved very much Diablo II back years ago. How could I go about getting it for my ubuntu (7.10)? Could I use apt-get? I love its simplicity!
Final Fantasy VII was another favourite of mine if that is possible?

The only similarity between Wesnoth and RTS is the word strategy... the RT part (real time) doesnt apply... unless somethign has changed MAJOR in the last year since i've played,
Wesnoth is an excellent though rather short and under developed Turn Based Strategy RPG, similar to such games as the Fire Emblem series and Final Fantasy Tactics (similar in genre, not in actual gameplay)
i highly recomend it till it bores the snot out of you

You can play Playstation versions of games on Linux with Playstation emulators, Mehashi - pSX Emulator (http://psxemulator.gazaxian.com/) is definitely the best of these, both from performance and ease of use aspects.
