Nice! Good post!

EDIT: Ouch. The sys reqs are a little too steep for me. I don't even cut the minimum. I'm running off of a laptop with 1.7 GHz and 512RAM, 128MB ATI Radeon X600

Will do.
You should properly report it so they can patch the thing quickly.
Still on 27% downloading.

FINALLY!
I have been waiting a lot for this game, I loved the first one.
But ouch... The requirements are very steep, I am barely on the recommended list :/
Does anyone know if I would gain a performance improvement if I use 64-bit?

Thanks!

well, my rigg is updated for the sole reason of running games under linux. Very happy to buy this puppy. You guys should try it out if your curious! Just waiting for the download to finish.

I think the client version is free or something like that.

Yeah! I'm using a 8800gt with a amd 6400 black edition. 2gb ram. I also have a 8800gtx but that one is on a amd64 5400+. My rig runs Gothic 3 (I don't know if anybody knows this game but it is super hard to run if you don't have a good rig for it{I super tweaked it to run with maxed settings and pushed it further beyond specs}). Should not be a problem at all. My Ubuntu loves my HP w2408 monitor 24" inches. I use to use a 32 inch high definition but those things do not do Any PC any justice unless your running low res even then, it blows because it blurs jpeg image defects which I need to see through my hp2408.....AHHH!!! ranting again.

I am glad to see s2 loves us! Thanks for the heads up dude. Maybe we will play on the same team sooner or later. i had to cancel downloading and i'll re download later on tonight. I already payed for it. Off to work.

ohh! Is anybody getting the collectors edition or something like that? or just paying for the download? what's the difference? I ran through it and just purchased a full copy and didn't bother with the free one.

Are you runnuing ALSA or Pulseaudio? Shutting off all other applications helped in my case.

I guess ALSA, because I'm on 7.10. I tried again with all sound apps off, but the issue persists.

Running the 64-bit version on Gutsy. The Command View is missing land textures, just looks like a mountain background. Some textures like the gold mine are completely white. Experienced one complete X lockup and one game crash. Game won't let me register because server "is not responding" although it can reject a false name/password just fine.

Edit: My issues have work arounds listed here: http://forums.s2games.com/showthread.php?t=9649

Vadi
March 27th, 2008, 10:49 AM
It looks like the sound issue is only during the beginning music, the game is OK.

Fun, very fast-paced, and having a good commander is really fun.

March 27th, 2008, 11:30 AM

March 27th, 2008, 09:18 PM
Okay, the game is working perfectly for me now.

The "no ground" bug was fixed by me turning my Shader Quality down to LOW. The forum's suggestion was to "Lower Texture Settings" but that did nothing to help.

I registered on the website instead of in-game (wouldn't let me register in-game). https://savage2.s2games.com/create_account.php

I've played about 2 hours now. Interesting game. My in-game name is "MagicalCappy"

Vadi
March 27th, 2008, 10:41 PM
Mine is "Vadi" when you see me about.

Much of a newb though still, I feel like their tutorial could have been more through in connecting things (I went through tutorial + 2 games on the net)

Nomis
March 29th, 2008, 05:12 AM
What fixed my sound problem was to edit the file ~/.savage2/game/startup.cfg

I changed sound_mixrate from 41000 to 48000
as mentioned here: http://forums.s2games.com/showthread.php?t=9858

Now it works when I use alsa.

You might want to try Low Shading and Low/Medium Shadows anyway. If that doesn't fix it then it is the "ATI problem". No workarounds.

The gane runs fine on my machine, and I played around a little. I noticed that there is a "stacked team" issue -- same that pretty much turned me off about Quake Wars after a few months. (Experienced players stacking on one team and steamrolling newer or weaker players.) Read a thread about it in their forum that left me with miixed feelings.

What's your experience, Vadi, and that of others?

Vadi
April 5th, 2008, 12:12 AM
Oh so that's what stacking is about.

I dunno, I haven't experienced it either in ETQW or in Savage 2. If you lose you lose, as long as you're having fun, it's all good. It is entirely possible to get a pretty bad team/commander vs a good team, but then you just make the best of it. I don't bother myself with that though :)

Only experienced bad commanders, not stacking.

I don't really know if I like that game's community. I just read some comments that Vadi got on their forum, and it's a serious turn-off. Maybe I'm just too picky.

I played some more today and the combat is a bit inaccurate. I can't really describe it, but it may be too fast (or I'm too slow ;)). I also miss running faster with shift held down. Such an essential feature!

Still testing, though!

Vadi
April 5th, 2008, 11:37 PM
You do run faster with shift held down though. Or was that some other button... You can also double-tab "w" to get a quick speed boost.

As for comments, heh, ignore that. Just random internet threads - those forums are among the nicest ones that I see for a commercial game.

Yeah and what is up with that weirdo UbuntuCappy on the forums. I heard he made a new character with the name MagicalCappy and has become quite skilled at the game now. He now understands a lot of the game strategy and can usually get top score or second-to-top. I heard he's buying the game and gave Vadi a referral. I also heard he talks in 3rd person. What a weirdo.

mivo
April 5th, 2008, 11:50 PM
Saw you, too. :p

Hrm, shift doesn't work for me. Going to have to try this again. Yes, yes, I'll probably buy it too -- like I said, if only because they actually released a native 64-bit client for Linux. I'm still so impressed by this.

Those shapeshifters are quite interesting. That one, and the shaman. I think those are the ones I seem to have the most fun with.

Vadi
April 6th, 2008, 10:42 AM
Oh, I absolutely suck as shaman. Mostly because I can't figure out what spell does what in warmup mode, and don't really want to play with that in the real game.

As a beast, I mostly play the pet guy... I've gotten pretty good at aiming the slow-moving projectiles ahead and spamming G+1 frantically.

And as a human, I play builders (yay towers + shotguns, and repairs), marksmen (if nobody else is, to put electric eyes everywhere), and savages.

Gotten OK-ish in melee combat, but people who are constantly blocking are a bit annoying :P

And thanks Cappy!

mivo
April 6th, 2008, 01:48 PM
Well, I've mostly played healers in online games in the past, so the shaman seemed a good choice. I still do miss how things were in Ultima Online (over ten years ago now -- yikes!) where the healing spells were part of every mage's spell arsenal, so you were not a "victim" like in (almost?) every other online game since. I do hear that in Warhammer Online the healers will not be as helpless (they advertised over here with a line saying, "In Warhammer Online healers don't stand in the back row."), but that's not out yet and I don't know if I'm willing to get a Windows partition for it. I still miss UO.

Anyway, the shaman's fun, though I died way too much because the teams I played on, well, they didn't really play together. I burnt through a demo account before I decided to buy the thing this morning. I kind of like the shape shifter as well -- seems to have potential, once I learn how to use him properly. ;) My problem with the summoner was that G/1 sometimes just didn't work in the heat of the fight. It's likely that I suck at it!

What I'm trying to figure out is why I had no "6" (build) button when I played a conjurer a few times this morning. The button was greyed out, but others did build stuff. Is there a level requirement? On the demo account that worked before, a few times anyway.

Artificial Intelligence
April 6th, 2008, 02:07 PM
I play "worker" all the time. Repair and supply to the troops.

Vadi
April 6th, 2008, 02:57 PM
You can only build stuff if there's no commander on the team. If there is one, he's the one building - you can only help repair/build, but not start new buildings.

As for g/1 - they have this "lock-on" thing, so what you do is do g/1, then lock onto a guy. As soon as he turns red, click, and you'll sic (sp?) the pet.

Just thought I'd give a heads-up here: Savage 2 is being sold on Steam for $10 this weekend. http://steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=app&AppId=13700

It should be feasible to load up Steam in Wine, buy the game, and then use the account on the native Linux client.
