Sound suddenly doesn't work???

Hi, I'm running Debian Lenny.

Suddenly, when I rebooted the computer, sound doesn't work.
I don't know why at all.

Any ideas?? :confused:

did u tried a custom kernel?or make sure u unmuted volume control PCM,master etc

sometimes that happens to me (on my ubuntu system) just reboot again and usually it fixes it...I have no idea what happens but it's such an easy fix I've never bothered to find out, lol.

I don't have a custom kernel and I havn't got the sound muted. I have tried rebooting but it doesn't have any effect.

When I try and test sound from System, Preferences, Sound. It says cannot open sound device

just check which kernel are installed.u may need to modprobe the modules needed.
check for ur audio h/w by "lspci |grep audio" and also the o/p of "lsmod |grep snd"
and post the o/p here

You might want to try booting with a live-cd, to make sure sound works, and so you know it is not a hardware-related issue.

Also, when I try booting into the Ubuntu Live CD, the sound works perfectly.

and adjust suitable values of slide control.

I'm having this issue too, although I'm using gNewSense (based on Hardy).

Sound worked with the live CD, as well as after install. But after first update/upgrade and reboot, sound is gone. I get this message when I try to open the volume control:

"No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found."

aplay -l says "no sound devices found"

Any help would be appreciated!

In case there's an off chance that you compiled with a stock .config for 2.6.24 found in the headers package (theoretically the 'non-custom', default kernel), all sound modules are disabled by default. Definately a mistake there. Happened to me.

Anyways judging by the sound of your problem (no pun intended) this probably isn't the culprit.

I am having this problem.. Happened after I downloaded the kernel headers to get VMWare working in 8.04....

I have the exact same problem here on Gutsy. I just turned on the computer this afternoon and my sound is completely gone. None of the suggestions posted on this thread have worked.

This sometimes happens to me when switching operating systems... I find the following fix always works:

1. Power down computer, remove power sources (battery, ac).
2. Hold down power key for 10 seconds, then hit function key + power key for 10 seconds, then (this step is optional) press some more keys and power key for 10 seconds (up to ten keys can be pressed by most people - yours may be less or more depending on genetics / farm accidents).
3. Plug back in and power on without battery. Or with. I don't think it matters.
