Aero is a big part of Vista, but there are some interesting changes under the hood.

Computer Management has some very nice performance monitors now, as well as extended and much more detailed event logs.

The ability to extend memory by using flash drives is a interesting addition, though poorly planned IMHO but still interesting.

Network manager has some improvements, and the ability to map the subnet you are on, though it does not give all the info unless you have more than 1 vista system on the network. Over all I found it to be a bit easier to navigate than XP.

Start menu has the run line tied into the search system as well as IE. Type a file and it will find it, type a web address and it will open, type a drive letter and it opens, type a command and it runs. This improvement is one of the best IMHO, and one you are seeing migrate to other OS's (KDE4 has a similar setup, much better implemented IMHO)

ready boost is a nice feature actually. I've used to with some success with a 1GB flash drive. I'm curious just how much it would use if you put a 16GB flash drive into it.

I find the sidebar to eat up precious RAM, and the aero to be a fairly useless.

Then again given the choice between performance or looks, performance wins everytime.

Vista isn't that bad though. I wouldn't consider it a necessary upgrade however.

I do like the addition of the UAC when you're not on an admin account. It works just like in Ubuntu where you have to enter an admin password to make an changes to the root directory. Which is a godsend from XP where you had to log into the admin account in order to install new software.
