Hey I've been using Ubuntu for a while now but am quite new to the command line side of things. I am trying to learn how to install things from source so that one day i may be able to change open-source software to work how i want it to.
I decided to first try gnome-panel. I used apt-get source gnome-panel which then ran the dpkg command giving me (what i believe to be) the ubuntu gutsy version of gnome panel source code. I then ran through the ./compile; make; sudo make install and that all went ok (after installing a few missing developement packages) but after removing the originl panel the result was that i was left with the gnome-panel which has not been tweaked by ubuntu
(i.e. when you click add to panel the items are in alphabetical order rather than sorted by type, and the quit button has been replaced by a log out button which doesnt give the colourful quit dialogue with all the options)
I was wondering whether there was something obvious i was getting wrong?
Cheers for your help!
