Hi Ubuntu'ers,
I removed Windows XP from my stationary computer and laptop last week and installed Ubuntu 7.10. My stationary computer is a:
Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 2.80GHz
RV380 [Radeon X600 (PCIE)] ATI Technologies Inc
2GB RAM
I did try to enable the restricted ATI driver, but that messes up Xorg completely. Disabling the restricted drivers makes everything work. Almost...
A completely fresh install of Ubuntu will freeze during usage with Desktop Effects enabled. The issue is very random and blocks Ctrl + Alt + Backspace. Also, I cannot switch to other terminals. I can move the mouse, but nothing reacts to clicks. The keyboard doesn't respond at all.
I haven't experienced this issue on my laptop which is an IBM T40.
Disabling Desktop Effects all together completely removes this issue. However, the cool effects and modern look disappears :)
I realize that other topics on these forums are very similar, but I found it hard to get a proper solution to fix this problem, and sometimes the issues differ substantially (one poster concluded that the freeze-up only happened during heavy usage, I've experienced it while doing work in the terminal).
Is there a solution? If no, I hope the information I provided can help fixing the bug. If yes, can someone point me in the right direction?
Regards,
Dan
BTW, I really loooove the recent versions of Ubuntu :)
