Good news for my fellow Xubuntu 7.10 users out there! I have found a dock that is similar to that of a mac, but actually works for Xubuntu. Here is all you need to do.

1. Go to the Synaptic Package Manager and install gDesklets.

2. After installation, go to accessories and launch the gDesklets Shell Manager.

3. In the menu on the left, scroll down to "toolbars/launchers."

4. Select toolbars/launchers, and double click on the desklet titled "Startbar."

5. And there you go! Just place it wherever you want it and right click on the bar to add/remove launchers and other settings.

6. Go to Autostart Applications, and add the gDesklets Shell to it so the dock automatically starts upon bootup.

*I can not set background images for it, it seems to have some sort of bug when you try to set one, but the dock works nonetheless and this is a minor trade off for a dock that WORKS.

You should try Cairo-Dock. Requires a compositor, uses Gtk. I'm sure it works well in Xubuntu. https://developer.berlios.de/project/showfiles.php?group_id=8724

No need to be condescending, I am sure you are a mature adult. I am just glad because this works, and many people are not aware that gDesklets has this particular feature. I have gtk so maybe I will give cairo dock a try. Can't go wrong with the gDesklets dock though, its very easy to use and to add launchers to.

If you want cairo-dock without the overhead of Compiz (say, if you have Via video on a laptop), I found it works perfectly by installing xcompmgr instead.

In Ubuntu Hardy, Metacity comes with compositing support. So xcompmgr becomes redundant over there.

I just changed the panel background and used it as a dock for my xubuntu - works great.

Yeah man it does work great. I just changed my background as well into one I made custom for it. I made one that looks much more OSX-like. While it isn't anything incredible, it is a decent effect!
