So, after a catastrophic fubaring of my computer because of my own stupidity, I have decided to reinstall ubuntu. I'm now on Hardy 32bit, and I want to get my installing looking just as it had before I went and did my old Gutsy install in. This involves getting the Aurora Gtk engine to work, so that I can have Gnome look like this (http://gnome-look.org/CONTENT/content-pre1/56438-1.png). What do I need to do? I've installed Aurora via a deb from Gnome look, but I can't seem to get everything to look like it does in that screen shot. Please, Ubuntu Gurus, you are my only hope.

So you have the engine installed, the theme selected, but it doesn't look exactly like the screenshot? Because i have the same theme, it also looks a bit different! I think it has something to do with the fact that the buttons on the screenshot don't have icons on them - icons make buttons bulkier. I don't know if that's what you are talkign about, though?

what I really want to do is get the minimize,maximize, quit buttons looking the same, and the general look, the smoothness, of the windows back. I've got something else running right now that is decent, but not quite as good.

I guess you selected the theme for the window that comes with the theme for the widgets (and it's called candido?). You can select a theme for the windows ( the one from the aurora screenshot), and still use Candido for buttons, menus, etc.

hey amazingtaters
regarding the screenshot , the windows border called "blended"
blended emerald theme :
http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Blended+Aurora?content=76870
blended metacity theme :
http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Blended?content=26050
after installing them , in appearance you can change the border and controls the way you want since aurora is already installed as you said!
cheers =)

Yeah, as it says in the title, Aurora is a GTK engine. The bit you want to change is not part of GTK, but part of the windows manager, ie metacity, emerald, etc. This is a different component so you would need a different theme. If you're using metacity, then go to System > Preferences > Appearance and click on customise, then choose your theme in the 3rd tab.
