I'm sure I'm not the first to say "I'm frustrated with Linux" but I am. It's kind of like 20 years ago when I was trying to learn to use DOS. Only then I didn't know anyone that knew it either. I am trying to give Ubuntu a try and I would really like to switch from Windows but trying to learn the terminal commands and understanding where things go when I try to install them is really getting me down. I don't understand "compiling", when I try to follow the step by step it seems that it's assumed I know what I'm doing and I don't. I can't even seem to grasp the simple concept of changing directories in terminal. Everything I've read about Ubuntu talks about how easy it is to use and that's true if what you want to use is already installed. but putting something in it is confusing. I've been trying to install Beryl on my system, I can find it I can download it, I can extract it but then I'm lost. Maybe I've become the old dog that can't learn new tricks.

you may wanna use synaptic package manager for installing different apps
medibuntu is a really good repository - you'll need to add some repositories
to synaptic for apps not already there, and be sure you click reload and search
every time

and if you have ubuntu 7.10, it has compiz-fusion - so you don't need beryl
look in synaptic for compizconfig settings manager or something like that
i don't know the terminal code for installing it, but i know it's all over this board

I have everything I need...all of my apps, some games, awesome desktop effects, pretty fonts, etc and I didn't compile one bit of code. I have yet to even scratch the surface of what Linux has to offer, yet I am using it effectively . My point is, I am a fresh new user to Ubuntu and I have a functional desktop computer with some neat extras and all thanks to these forums, the synaptic package manager and Google!

Seriously, if I have even the smallest question I search google like this:

Ubuntu my question

99 percent of the time I will find that I was and am not the only person with that same exact question. There will most likely be a link to a thread on these very forums with a whole conversation about my question. I'll find my answer and probably learn something new at the same time! Keep at it!!!

just got to Applications/Add/Remove search for compiz, and make sure your selection to the right is to (show all available applications) and then you will see the 3D compiz manager (Advanced Desktop Effects Settings )(ccsm).

Just select that and install, there are so many effects on this thing it's very cool

also search the forums about how to make a cube, and you should get all the info there about the 3 dimensional multi desktop cube.

I hope this helps.
