i'm partial to the xbox controller or the logitech chillstream. if you prefer the ps2 controller design, go with the logitech rumblepad2

Personally, I'm very fond of Playstation 2 pads. They tend to be better constructed than PC pads, and have extra features (macro recording, turbo fire, etc). They're easily usable through a USB adapter. They fail on programmability, though.

If you do decide to go this route, though, stay away from pads made by Mad Catz or Dream Gear. The former have serious compatibility problems (I can only imagine that they'd work OK with the PS2, but whether using them with the Gamecube or the PC through adapters I always have issues), and the latter are just plain cheap.
