I really hope this doesn't get flamed...
Me and a team of programmers and modellers have gotten together recently and we are very serious about completing a game. It will be extremely difficult to compete with other companies, that's why our plan is to give as much support as possible, meaning Widescreen of course (tripple head, the works!) run natively in linux, mac, windows. Listen to our users for ideas and improvements, and take advantage of higher end systems, as well as allow it to run smoothly on far more inferior PC's. That will put us up a notch....as most games offer very poor support in the afore mentioned areas.
as for the game, we want it to be original to turn some heads, multiplayer only, because we want to keep this project realistic, mutliplayer is the easiest type of game to make generally, but also because I find users are more inclined to accept bugs and errors in a multiplayer environment than a single-player one, less pressure. The game needs replayability value above anything else. and we want it to be very original, flexible via scripting for servers ect....
So that being said, we are going around asking what kind of game people would like to see. Right now FPS (First Person Shooter) is the favorite among the developers and other forums responses, so if you want to stick with that, what features would you like to see that will make a game shine above the rest.
NOTE: we are going for feel, playability, and fun. Not so much graphics and looks. that's for now though, we will see how well it progresses, and may offer separate low quality models textures ect.... for lower end PC's.

If you are going for a FPS, then I want a good gameplay above all. Smooth, fast-paced, with a varied but balanced arsenal of weapons. Take a look at Quake 3, that kind of games are the best in my opinion. A low learning curve, varied kinds of maps, perhaps different 'modes' with different kinds of weapons (maybe like a futuristic set, a modern set, a medieval set etc... ) and different kind of gametypes (CTF, FFA, TDM, Assault, then depending on the weapon set, specific kinds of gametypes for them (space-battles in futuristic weapon set, Conquer the Castle in medieva and go on) and give a huge cap (I would enjoy 64 vs 64 fights :P ) whereas you can also put in a low one, and please add in a reasonable easy to use map creator.
If you are going for a MMORPG, then I would want a proper guild/alliance system, with easy to manage ranks and permissions, good chat systems, a story-line, not too high 'effective' level cap (like level 50 as max effective level) and a high "1337"-level cap (above the effective level cap it only shows how much you've played, and gives access to for example cheaper versions of end-game armor, custom looking gear, that kind of stuff that doesn't cause an imbalance but is worth leveling for) and a customizable interface (look at World of Warcraft, for what kinds of add-ons they got.. )
I hoped that this helped you a bit. My primary kinds of games are shooters and MMORPGs.

I'd really like to see games that are truly graphical come from this project it seems to me that many of the good realistic 1st person D&D would be good. many plots and actual caricatures that move somewhat correctly. I have played NWN on both windows (yuc) and on Ubuntu Linux and while the graphics are terrific I long for something else similar just for Linux (if for no other reason than to piss Bill G off) hope to see your contribution soon

If you're going to add to the already diluted FPS market, please make it something that departs from the normal 'point and shoot'. It would be nice to see another cross breed type game like Hexen. Or make a different setting altogether.
The reason so many FPS games are military themed isn't because there is such a huge demand for them, it's because the military supports developers who work with them on the game.
A game where the goal isn't just mindlessly running after your opponent, but where you actually get a feeling of accomplishment. A game in a setting you wouldn't expect, doing something you wouldn't expect. "Postal" is an extreme example, but "A Tale in The Desert" is a more down to earth example, although that's a MMORPG.

Aye, with medival weapons and magical content could be fun. Because there's so many (as in "many for linux") "normal" FPS games out there.
A Merlin themed FPS .
Or make it TPS like Runes.
(would love to see something like Dungeon Keeper for linux/OPen Source)

An age of sail simulation would be lots of fun. The player can select a nation on the eve of the Napoleonic Wars and, as a new captain, is assigned a ship. After selecting crew and outfitting for a voyage he is off to make his future on the high seas. There he can team up with other captains to take merchantmen of the enemy and pirates, or seek to destroy PCs playing for the enemy.
I'd be glad to help if you decide to do something like this. If you want more information, just ask.

The game needs replayability value above anything else.
If you're after replay value, may I suggest designing in support for the mod community. As you build the game, also spend some time with the tools you use to create the content and then make those tools available for users to create additional content.

For me originality and game-play have to be the main concern. Portal was the last big success for me. That having been said one of the reasons I own a PC is to play FPS's with keyboard and mouse as playing anything on consoles and controllers is slow and cumbersome by comparison.

I honestly don't think users can tell you what they want. They can tell you what they DON'T LIKE but not what they want. In order for your project to be a success, especially if it's a FPS, you're going to have to give people something they want but don't know it. Simply put, it NEEDS to be original. Personally, I think you could get a lot of interest by making a single-player FPS. There are precious few of them available for linux as it is.
