atleast boys ages 7/8-12 will like the first person shooters and games like Battle for Wesnoth, or the simple old arcade like games.

If you're after something less violent I would suggest all the arcade style games and clones that have their base in Super Mario ect. that lvl of gaming is simple but still fun for all ages, young and old

Well, I work in a daycare center/school and set up Ubuntu PCs.

The games I put on them are:

0-1 grade (age 5-7)
Fizzball
Professor Fizzwizzle
Pingus
Powermanga
Memonix
Riotball
Secret Maryo Chronicles
funguloids
Astromenace

for
2-3 grade (age 8-10):
the same games as 0-1 are available
plus these

Glest
Warzone2100
Wormux

These games have been approved and documented.
I'll soon add more games to the PCs but first I need to see how well it goes with the current games.

If they are preschool or elementary age, two excellent educational game suites are GCompris and Childsplay.

Both are in the repos. My boy loves them.
