for the lazy people (or the people who really don't know where to find it):
http://www.planeshift.it
for people on low bandwidth lines: the client itself is a 250mb download.

I downloaded and when I tried to run the installer .run file it didn't work. When I did it in a terminal it just stopped. The first time, after changing permissions, I double clicked on the file itself and it went to its own text box. It went through checking and unpacking but then said I needed the "dialogue" program which I should get by the cd or by ftp download. Of course, there is no such program available on the site. I assume this is a dependency of some kind. But what is it?

I did the install last night. You need to get the package "dialog" in Synaptic (I think it's in universe).
It installed fine and the updates went pretty fast. However, my laptop doesn't have 3D acceleration under Linux and my desktop was busy rendering a DVD so I also installed it in my laptop's XP partition. I waited for updating to finish for 2 hours and went to bed (the server's in Italy and I was only getting 2k/s download). I tried it this morning but I think my laptop just doesn't have enough "umph". I'll have to load it on my desktop and play some more.

that works, but it will take some research to play, I guess. I got into the city and npc's don't talk...it's unclear where to go or what to do and you have no starting inventory whatsoever. Sadly, I'm not sure this game is for me. Certain graphics engines leave me feeling motion sick for some reason and this is one of them. I don't know why some do and some don't.

looks like a fun game, is there any PVP combat, and if there is, whats it like?
Not a big fan of PVE personally hehe.

I too got it running, and it looks very nice.
Very original way of setting up your avatar, though the texts seem quite hard to read for me. (light coloured text on a light coloured background tend to do that) :)
The way the character walks seems a bit weird too. gliding more than really walking, but I'll try to find some time, to play(-test) this game :) The fact that this game looks awesome already in its alpha stage is saying something for the quality it can become. :)

I haven't played Horizons, Everquest, or WoW so this is a completely new game type for me. From what I read, PVP will be implemented in arenas and battleground areas, somewhat like WoW. The biggest problem is that it is still alpha, not even beta, and there were only like 50+ people on when I first tried it.
The graphics look very good. I also went to the Crystal Space (http://www.crystalspace3d.org) website, which is the engine they are using, and looked at some of its capabilities. Very nice indeed.

installed this earlier tonight, went to make a character but I couldn't get past that screen. Decided to just close it and try again and it magically worked. Pretty cool game, gonna give it a decent try.

Just installed too (taking the advice on their forums and installing 'dialog' via apt get first) and created a character. Some of the graphics seems to be loading a bit weirdly on my client. There's a row of buttons across the top in the screen shots that seem to have expanded to fill the whole screen for me. Also the mouse is none too clever - choppy and slow to respond. I'll have a poke around their forums and see if it these be fixed. Otherwise looks good, especially for an alpha.

Strange....the graphics are really choppy for me. I installed the official nvidia drivers, including what they have for the nForce4 motherboard.
Anyone else? Or is it just that my system is running on too late of hardware to be fully supported on linux?
Motherboard: Foxconn nForce4 ultra
Processor: AMD Athalon 64 3000+ (but running 32 bit Ubuntu, for now)
Video Card: eVGA e-GeForce 6600GT
Onboard audio(AC97 codec), onboard network (10/100/1000), onboard everything else.
As I understand it, nVidia doesn't make their own hardware, just the drivers for hardware that they design and have other people make? So it shouldn't matter if I get my drivers from nvidia or foxconn/evga. Right?
<edit> checked foxconn and eVGA.....neither of them have linux drivers, so that doesn't help...</edit>

Alright, I figured out my problem. Apparently, performance drops by about 100 fps when I have sound enabled. Doesn't matter if it's OpenAL, software, whatever. It dies.
Anyone else have similar problems?

P.S. I'm working my way around the world, but things are still VERY hard for me to find. If anyone feels like making an in game friend (who is a newb) let me know. I hate wandering around in MMO's with no friends. I feel lonely....

I have it installed and fixed sound so it runs fine, but at the main screen, where it shows three big gems, there's absolutely no text that I can see.
