I just built a setop box and managed to configure myth and ubuntu after 4 nights of hell. Would others be interested in starting a ubuntu based project something along the lines of knoppmyth ? I think if there are others like me who like compiling software and playing with drivers ect ect it could be fun.

I am just using KnoppMyth for my MythTV box and I am quite happy with it. Took me a few hours to setup, and this was just because I didn't know the "Knoppix-way" of doing things.

Ubuntu is in my opinion a desktop application and not suitable for this things. Yeah, I know, it is Linux and can work. But why start another project if KnoppMyth made good progress? Better start supporting these guys instead of reinventing the wheel again IMHO.

Just my 2 cents.

I like that idea. But I also don't think there is any reason to reinvent the wheel. KnoppMyth rocks at what it does, and Ubuntu rocks at what it does. I want my computer to be able to do everything for me and I like the way Ubuntu handles those things so far. I like working in an Ubuntu desktop, and I like the decisions that Ubuntu makes so that I don't have to. I also think Ubuntu is no less suited for a MythTV box than KnoppMyth. I think that if there were an Ubuntu-based MythTV project, it's focus should be to make sure that anyone who wants, can type sudo aptitude install mythtv and have a DVR up and running without any trouble. In other words, it should make sure that recent versions of MythTV are included in each release and that installation is as trivial as possible. Not to have another live cd distribution that recognizes everything and automatically sets up a minimal desktop.

I would love to be able to apt-get the most recent release of the Mythtv frontend to enable me to link convieniently to my living room knoppmyth box. but last I checked it isn't in the repos. Eventually I will try to get it setup but it looks kind of daunting to a noob like me.
