I know it's not in the repos yet for ubuntu but is there still a way to install it so I can check out the features?

upgrade to hardy and you will have 2.22. but i must warn you as hardy is still in alpha phase and it is not advisable to use it for production system.

PS: I am using it on my laptop and seems pretty stable so far.

I wouldn't advise installing an Alpha, they are incomplete and depending which version you install, and then update, you will have issues, beleive me.

The Beta which comes out this Thursday or Friday would likely be safe to try, but I wouldn't put it into a critical environment.

It's pretty solid already.

It's pretty solid already.

Well, depends... on what you are doing with it and on what hardware.

I had to delete Alpha 4, what with updating it almost daily, and finally it wouldn't load. I downloaded Alpha 6 to start again, and have been updating it daily. It is now is a state where Nautilus will not run. So I await more updates. Font are not right... Tracker is broken... plus many more things I can't remember this moment.

I've been testing Alphas and Betas since 1995, and I can say that it can be all-okay or one big reinstall after another. <smile>

We each have to do as we will.

back to the original question, how do we install gnome 2.22? any debs for it or do we have to build it ourselves?

Try gargnome: http://www.gnome.org/projects/garnome/ if you're really interested. My recommendation would be to wait for the release of Ubuntu 8.04.

gnome 2.22 itself is a collection of apps and can't just be updated as a deb

You could install Hardy alpha 6 in a virtual machine via VirtualBox or VMWare, so that you don't need to change your existing Ubuntu installation.

Alpha 6 CD when installed will notify you that over 200 updates are ready! <grin>

And if you update, the system will be broken, one way or another. <sigh>

Wait for the Beta, this Thursday, or maybe Friday.
