View Full Version : Nothing but frustration: nVidia GeForce 8600 GTS w. 2 x Asus MW221

I just would like to have configured my basic HW, whereas
OS Gutsy
BIOS onboard graphic card disabled
Graphic card geForce 8600 GTS installed in PEG (PCI Express Graphic)
Monitor MW221U x 2 (Dual)
driver nVidia
Here is a copy of the terminal window:
========================
garavan@Giant:~$ nvidia-settings
ERROR: Invalid display device CRT-0 specified on line 19 of configuration file
'/home/garavan/.nvidia-settings-rc' (the currently enabled display
devices are DFP-0 on Giant:0.0).
ERROR: Invalid display device CRT-0 specified on line 20 of configuration file
'/home/garavan/.nvidia-settings-rc' (the currently enabled display
devices are DFP-0 on Giant:0.0).
ERROR: The attribute 'XVideoSyncToDisplay' specified on line 49 of
configuration file '/home/garavan/.nvidia-settings-rc' cannot be
assigned the value of CRT-0 (the currently enabled display devices are
DFP-0 on Giant:0.0).
========================
I also attached the Screenshot of the NVIDIA X Server Settings (as png) I would have rather posted it directly with the picture tool, but it asked me a URL. What is the URL for my screenshot.png file stored on my desktop?
========================
Currently the second screen went blank, I only see one Display working and I'm not even sure that this display is configured the right way, but I'm learning the hard way. Nobody warned me about all the trouble.
Anyone has a solution for proper configuration? Thank you for any useful help!!!

Hi Folks!
I could finally reinstall Gutsy after serious boot failures caused by installation without splash. I also lost my XP installation and transferred files since I had to repartioned the whole drive. At least I managed come back alive. It seems that lots of us have the same installation problem with that particular driver. Can someone tell me, what would be the official way to get the driver working and configured for dual display? I'm so frustrated. Is the new version, Hardy a better choice to solve the problem? Now I'll sit back and wait for your replies, for which I thank you in advance.

I just get back with my system. So everything I wrote previously isn't the case at the present time. That is the reason I posted a new thread. Please be with me there:http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=725236
to avoid duplicates or obsolete information.
Thanks Nythian

So far in this new installation I reloaded the restricted manager and core with Synaptic and from the Restricted Drivers Manager enabled the NVIDIA driver. Set the following Bios
Init Display First
As to the questions asked by Nythian:
1. Under /home/garavan/ I could not find any .nvidia-settings-rc file
2. I find xorg,conf (a) and xorg.conf.1 (b) under /etc/X11/.

I have merged this thread with the previous one.
@Garavan:
Make sure you use CODE tags with the content of files such as the xorg.conf so as not to take up too much space.

BIOS setting
Init Display First PEG PCI Express Graphic
Frame Buffer Size 256 MB
Onboard GPU Enable If No Ext PEG
This settings were made during a restart, which I thought needed for the driver to start.
However, currently I don't see any place to configure nVidia settings. Please ask me for more info, if you need it.

More frustration!
Even the Envy package failed, which I did not attend to run at the first place, but since I did not get any response from this community, I decided to give it a shot. I really want to set up my PC to be able to do some work. If I won't be able to get a working environment by Sunday afternoon then I need to go back to Windows XP, which at least was working.
1. Dl and install OK (I guess)
2. Envy - E Enabling Extra Repositories reference
It refers to a Dapper Dake version and not to a Gutsy.
I just hope did the right things!?
3. the command "sudo apt-get install -f" resulted to the following
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.
Which again is a good or a bed news?
4. Launch Envy's GUI brought the following result"
Error!
Envy is unable to run because of the lack of the following packages:
dkms
Please install them manually and launch Envy again
I'm really scarred to go further. It seems to me a little odd. Again, I'm waiting for some responses.

(Continued)
Downloaded missing packages and started with the GUI envy. It went through of a bunch of installation steps, and restarted the system. Now I see 2 identical screens. Again, I was sometimes at the same stage, when I manually installed the driver and started with frustration since like here too, I could not find the place to configure the nVidia settings.
At least I get back to square one. To achieve the same result I could by a mirror instead of an additional display and graphic card.
I could not find any additional info on the Envy page as how to proceed after the installation is done to begin with the actual configuration. Brrr.
