I BETA tested this package, IT IS AWFUL, uses tons of resources, wants to phone home constantly and crashes a lot (even for an MS BETA).

I think he looks way more serious than Ballmer... But that's not saying much.

I don't get it. What is this "security service" of which they speak?
I remember at one time, Microsoft purchased some AV companies. They were going to integrate some AV stuff into your systray, like MS update, et cetera. Is this something different? I don't remember a fee being associated with that AV "service" I remember hearing about.

Microsoft has always been chock-full to the rafters with Viruses, Spam, and all the rest of it. The only way to not get Viruses, Spam, etc. with Windows is not to use it! Also, note they didn't give a timeline? How much do you want to bet that this product will be out within 3 years? I really doubt it.
I have actually disabled everything Windoze-update and security related, like those patches and things, I turned them completely off. I think that, and not using XP for anything but a very short period of time is the only way to keep a Windows installation reasonably healthy. You guys don't want to know how much spyware, viruses, and other junk is on my parents computer . . .
Yes, I am feeling cynical, but I just lot about an hour worth of work on a computer I was using at school with Win2k because it "unexpectedly crashed", according to the technician, so I can be justifiably cynical.

MS OneCare, a one stop shop for anti-virus, anti-spyware, backups, etc.. It's a nice idea but the package is bloated and buggy. Best laugh of the day, I posted how much I hated OneCare this morning and when I got home tonight a new CD with the latest OneCare build was in my mail box. They must be fishing as to why I haven't given feedback in a while, the first 2 releases were so bad I removed them from my test PCs at the office.

So Micros~1 is now selling a solution for a problem they created themselves?
Now I understand how business works.

I'm "beta-testing" OneCare right now, but I've got XP running through VMware so it's I can afford to play around. *So far* it's not that horrible, it needs alot of work before it should be given to the public but It doesnt seem *that* bloated but I'm not really using XP that often any more. It's a good Idea, but about 6 years too late.

It's *DOESN'T* handle spyware, you still need giant software... I mean M$ AntiSpyware, and the backups are a joke, it will back up *any* image, music, doc file on the system, so all those little graphics in help files, installers, etc. will get backed up as well. *LONG WAY TO GO*

Yea, but integrating the anti-spyware part is on the agenda and one of the weekly builds showed some architecture changes in this direction. As far as bloat goes, look and see how much RAM all those processes are taking up, far more than several competing solutions from other companies.
Honestly, I hadn't run Linux for about 2 months due to spending tons of time on XP due to a work project. I had been invited to the OneCare BETA early on and actually thought it was a good idea. I had been kicking around re-installing Linux and was researching distros because I was tired of Manrdake/driva. As I was reading up on Ubuntu I got an email with my OneCare BETA key, downloaded, installed and was very disappointed. Two days later i was on Ubuntu and haven't looked back. OneCare is one more example of how poorly MS implements good ideas.
I've been back and forth with Linux for several years, but I still have to deal with a lot of Windows at work. Ubuntu finally gave me what I always wanted, a Debian based distro with a slick installer, bleeding edge hardware support and apt-get. Microsoft begone, and take your bloated excuse for a security suite with you.

The more I think about it, the idea of using or needing antivirus and antispyware softare is just silly. :)

I was in the same boat, 'till I finally got VMware working, so now XP is where it belongs, on a Vm where it cant hurt anyone. If I were using XP in a live environment there's no way I would use a beta AV. I found Ubuntu right after it came out, by accident, and have this month finally deleted my XP partitions *for good*
I only need XP for 2 things really VS 2003 (school teaches VB.NET), and AutoGK until dvd::rip/transcode works w/ amd64.

Yea, my job might pay for me to go back and finish my degree which will put me in a couple VB classes as well (if I can't get the school to flip me into Java developement) so I might have to get VMWare up and running as well. How is performance w/VB under VMWare?

I misread the article initially and was confused. Just in case anyone's a dufus like me:
...technology unit, said Client Protection, as the company is calling it, will be similar to Windows OneCare.
If you read that like me, "blah blah blah Client Protection blah blah blah" straight through and didn't notice the capitilaztion. "Client Protection"? What a rather bland and uncreative marketing fiasco that name is. I bet it took all of 15 seconds for that guy whistling over a urinal cake to come up with that masterpiece. wtf?
So, you basically have two here: "MS OneCare" and "Client Protection". Gotcha. No Problem. I think.

Security isn't free? Why are they going to make you pay? Shouldn't they make it more secure for free?

As long as you have enough memory to give the XP VM what it needs (768MB), It runs smoothly, I have it up and runnung side by side with Ubuntu and I hardly see a slowdown unless one side is pulling down HUGE CPU requirements.
btw: VMWare 5.5rc1 works flawlessly in breezy, no need to patch anyhing.
