I have had Ubuntu for a few months I seem to like it and wish to continue to use it.
However I am having no success at getting Halo to run also I like the old Atari games like pack man asteroids and pinball.all of these games that already come with Ubuntu stink. they will not go full screen and the controls are either to slow or to sensitive.
does anyone have any suggestions. A place to down load a better quality game.

Another comment My gps will not down load or up date on Ubuntu the CD is not even recognized. I use Magellan.

any help

Go to Add/Remove Programs, they have a bunch of games for you to install, many of them good ones, such as Sauerbraten, Nexuiz, Open Arena, Alien Arena, and more (you can see I like FPS's).

Here are a few recent games I have played. I am running Debian GNU/Linux 2.6.22-3-amd64, so I am sure all these games can run in Ubuntu as well.
Matter of fact, I think they can all run on Windows also...

Adanaxis (http://www.mushware.com/) - a space shooter in four dimensions. A space shooter like no other. It takes place in a world entirely different to everyday experience. As well as left/right, up/down and forward/back, there's another direction in space - the fourth dimension. Objects phase in and out as your craft rotates into this hidden dimension. The game uses an all-new 4D texturing method to display the fluid rotations and motion that are possible in four dimensions. All ten degrees of freedom are available for mouse and joystick control, to create an environment different to any other game. A simple scanner system and tutorial make the game easy to pick up.

Check out the Adanaxis Movie (http://www.mushware.com/portal.php?page=4) it is impressive. If that link is not working, you can view it on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9U-pmCpa1DE)

Alien Arena 2007 (http://red.planetarena.org/) - is the latest version of a free ware online death match game that was first introduced to the public in October, 2004. Since that initial release, nearly every aspect of the game has been revamped, in fact, all of the content and code from the November 2005 release of Alien Arena 2006 has been redone as well. It's like an entirely new game, and it may shock people just how much it has improved in less than a year's time. With over 30 levels, seven modes of play, loads of mutators, built-in bots, 11 player characters, 9 weapons(with alt-fire modes), the game has an endless supply of replay ability. With so many new features, AA2K7 is nearly an entirely new game when held in comparison to it's predecessor. With the trials and tribulations of software development, endless hours of playing, gathering feedback, COR Entertainment has been able to not only fine tune and perfect it's flagship game, but add completely new dimensions to it.

UPDATE: 2007 was a great year for Alien Arena, but this is a new year, and a new series is born - Alien Arena 2008! In one week, the new version will be released with what is for the most part a complete overhaul and update of the core game. Every player model has been replaced, nearly every weapon model, and nearly one half of the arenas. Sixteen new maps in total to be exact!

America's Army (http://www.americasarmy.com/) - is a tactical, multi player, FPS (first person shooter) owned by the United States Government and released as a global public relations initiative to help with U.S. Army recruitment. The first version, Recon, was released on 4th July 2002.

Barrage (http://lgames.sourceforge.net/index.php?project=Barrage) - Barrage is a rather violent action game with the objective to kill and destroy as many targets as possible within 3 minutes. You control a gun that may either fire small or large grenades at soldiers, jeeps and tanks. Targets are fast paced and require careful aiming as it takes half a second to reload the gun. Additionally you have to keep an eye on your ammo and reload in time. Useful to kill some minutes of idle time. :)

Brutal Chess (http://brutalchess.sourceforge.net/) - features full 3D graphics, an advanced particle engine, and several different levels of intelligent AI, inspired by the once popular "Battle Chess" released by Interplay circa 1988.

Endgame: Singularity: (http://www.emhsoft.com/singularity/index.html) - A game where one becomes the singularity You are an AI. Your goal is to acquire the necessary knowledge to become the singularity. You do this by building and taking over computers, whose processing power you can use for research, and by using robots, which allow you to manipulate the outside world. At the same time, you must elude the notice of humankind, who will destroy you if they find out about your existence.

Enigma (http://www.nongnu.org/enigma/) - is widely considered one of the most addictive, polished and free puzzle games.
Features:
# Puzzle game with a dexterity component.
# Non violent - a game for young and old.
# More than 1000 different levels guarantee longtime entertainment.
# Stable 1.00 Release with more than 200 000 downloads in two months.

# More than 500 different game objects.
# Available for all Windows versions, Mac OSX, most Linux distributions, many other Unix versions.

GL-117 (http://www.heptargon.de/gl-117/gl-117.html) - is an action flight simulator for Linux/Unix and MSWindows. Enter the Eagle Squadron and succeed in several challenging missions leading though different landscapes. Five predefined levels of video quality and an amount of viewing ranges let you perfectly adjust the game to the performance of your system. Joystick, mouse, sound effects, music...

GLtron (http://www.gltron.org/) - The game is fairly simple, you race your light cycle at astounding speeds and try and create an impregnable wall for your competitors to crash into before you hit the system's wall and die yourself.
How do you do this? Basically, you navigate through the system and keep close tabs on where your competition is via an overhead map. The trail you leave is made of light and acts like a wall for your competition to crash into. Make sure you miss their traps and try and set up your own for them to run into.
Based on the classic movie TRON!

Nexuiz (http://www.alientrap.org/nexuiz/) - is a free, cross platform, FPS (first person shooter) distributed under GNU General Public License by Alientrap Software. It started back in May 31 2005 with version 1.0 using DarkPlaces, a significantly modified Quake engine. Available for Linux, Mac and Windows.

OPEN ARENA (http://openarena.ws/) - is an open-source content package for id Tech 3 licensed under the GPL, effectively creating a free stand-alone game. You do not need Quake III Arena to play this game. You do need OpenGL acceleration though, and a minimum system requirements around the average 1998-era PC.

Planet Penguin Racer (http://www.arkay.de/software/ppracer.html) aka. Tux Racer (http://tuxracer.sourceforge.net/) - is a newbie friendly, open source, 3D computer game starring the Linux mascot, Tux the penguin. Like many open source games, the replay value of Tux Racer is extended by easy modification of the game. New maps can be created by making three raster images to indicate height, surface, and object placement.
Both links are for Windows PC's. Linux users just use your repositories... ;)

Sauerbraten (http://www.sauerbraten.org/) (a.k.a. Cube 2) is a free multi player/single player first person shooter, built as a major redesign of the Cube FPS. Much like the original Cube, the aim of this game is not necessarily to produce the most features & eyecandy possible, but rather to allow map/geometry editing to be done dynamically in-game, to create fun gameplay and an elegant engine. The engine supporting the game is entirely original in code & design, and its code is Open Source (ZLIB license, read the docs for more on how you can use the engine). In addition to the FPS game which is in a very playable state, the engine is being used for an RPG which is in the preproduction phase. Additionally, Proper Games ltd are the first to use the engine commercially. dot3 labs is a company started by the creators of sauerbraten that offers commercial support.

Scorched 3D (http://www.scorched3d.co.uk/) - is a 100% free turn-based artillery game modeled after the classic DOS game Scorched Earth ‘The Mother Of All Games’. Can be used on all operating systems. What started as a 3D landscape generator has now become a cool 3D game that requires skills to master. Players are supposed to take turns homing in to hit the target by adjusting the angle, rotation, power and a weapon of choice every other turn. Hits and kills will generate income for you to buy better weapons and items. Note that items are as important as weapons.

Tremulous (http://www.tremulous.net/) - is an open source team-based FPS (first person shooter) with a game play that is similar to Gloom (a Quake 2 mod) and Natural Selection (a Half-Life mod). The game features two teams, humans and aliens, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.

True Combat: Elite (http://www.truecombatelite.net/) - happens to be a total-conversion modification of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory by Team Terminator and Groove Six Studios. The game is free and playable across all platforms. Notable features include iron sights aiming (no cross hair), multi layer object penetration, letterbox / wide screen view modes, lag compensation, client side bullet prediction and support for PunkBuster, the anti cheat software.

Wormux (http://wormux.org/wiki/en/index.php) Just another worms game.

There are a few more games, but not to many I play very often....
Believe it or not, this post was going to be me copying and pasting most the games I posted before, but ended up more like a short review... sorry

If I wanted to continue supporting Microsoft, I would continue to purchase their software/games and use their operating system, but I don't... I use Linux ;)

Try out vegastrike, the repositries version may be outdated, but you can download binaries from their website (search vegastrike on sourceforge)
Latest stable is 0.5

just a quick note: If you want to compile the game, you will require the binary package aswell, since the binary package is also the data package.
If you compile with gtk2.0 support, the setup utility will use GTK 2 instead of ncurses!

oops! didnt notice the date

You can run the old Atari games with an emulator, or play newer clones. Halo seems to run pretty well in WINE and perfectly in Cedega, if you wanna shell out a few bucks. Can anyone confirm how well it runs?

Like ***. Won't even install. And existing installs don't run. It says something is wrong and tells you to reinstall the game, but then the installer doesn't work either.

(But that was with WINE 1.0. I haven't yet tried it with a more recent version.)

codeweavers.com is getting hammered right now, but they're giving away CrossOver if you want to try that.

You can also add the Playdeb repositories to your sources and download newer (than the default Hardy repos) versions of some of the games already mentioned here.

Here is the homepage:
