Same here. Only I just bought the game and was hoping to use it on my Ubuntu box. Anyone have suggestions or a fix?

Valve had an update to all their games on 9/23 which caused massive problems with a high percentage of the PCs. This is probably the issue for you. Valve and the user community is still trying to resolve the problems caused by the update.

By the way, as a noob to Ubuntu, does HL2 and HL2DM run directly on Linux? Or do you need to run via wine or ceda etc? What kind for fps do you get in Ubuntu? Or at least before the last update from Valve?

Well, I installed hl2 many months ago, but I never actually played it. I think the server version of counter-strike runs natively on gnu/linux, but for playing it, I've installed cedega 4.3
