I like ubuntu, but I hate that wallpaper that came with it by default. Brown and yellow? Gah.
Here's a quickie that I whipped up with The Gimp. I'm used to PaintShopPro, so I apologize in advance, as I'm just learning The Gimp...

Not bad for a new Gimpist. ;-)
Well, from an experienced GIMP user, here are some tips:
1. Try not to use small tiles in wallpapers, as it makes it look . If you're going to make one with tiles, try to use large ones (on or over the size of '256x256px') or make your own tiles that are over '256x256px'
2. If you hate all the window and they seem to clutter your desktop, try to dedicate a workspace to it. I like to use the second desktop if there is nothing on it. If there is, then I use the next one, and so on. You can use your own strategy, of course.
3. Try instead to get the original Ubuntu font (which I'm also looking for), and try to collect the ubuntu logo from the live CD (until you get more expeienced with cutting using the GIMP, no offense. ;-) ).
4. JPEG compression can wear and tear your image down. BMP offers full quality, but PNG is your best choice, but since you are experienced with PSP, you should already know what I mean.
5. Listen to some of your favorite music while designing. It can really get you started.

None taken...
I'm just used to the plethora of selection tools PSP has... Edge Seeker being my favorite. Haven't found an equivalent in the Gimp yet.
