Hello everyone. I'm trying to consolidate my computer to be just Ubuntu. I have an XP partition, which only purpose is to run Puzzle Quest and Oblivion.

I followed this guide to try to get Oblivion working:
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Linux#Where_do_you_get_Wine_for_Ubuntu.3F

I didn't have much luck though. From the looks of it, that guide looks a bit outdated now. Now I'm using Hardy, however the last time I tried to get Oblivion working was with Gutsy. All I remember is that after launching Oblivion, at the opening scene (in the jail cell) the room would be all white and would be spinning in circles infinitely.

Has anyone had any luck getting Oblivion to work?

Also I have the PC version of Puzzle Quest. That games addiction level is second only to Oblivion itself. Anyone get that one working with Ubuntu?

oblivion...well...runs in cedega. but after running it full gun with all graphics up in windows I have to turn graphics down running in cedega. Id recommend checking out the newest version of wine that just came out or looking into the crossover games thread from today:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=720131

im curious to try oblivion in wine sometime but for now im in the same boat, running it on a windows drive.

I'd run Windows in a VM or dual boot if I were you -- you should get much better performance out of your games. Oh, and you should play Morrowind instead of Oblivion -- it's ten times better.

Cool, Crossover Games may just do the trick. Other than that I'll wait until someone has tried the new Wine and can confirm its status.

Running Windows in a VM results in no 3D hardware acceleration, the very thing Oblivion needs most. Windows is something I'm trying to get rid of, I don't see the point in wasting all that space for a partition I only use for one purpose.

As far as Morrowind being ten times better, I have both, and words cannot describe how much I disagree with you. Oblivion is WAY beyond Morrowind. They're both great games but Oblivion is amazing.

I played Oblivion via Cedega, on a machine equipped with an Athlon 64 bit 3500 mhz, 2 gig of DDR2 Ram, & an XFX 7950GT /512 Mb DDR3 graphics card. The machine was running Sabayon 3.4f.

Oblivion played really well, I had all of the official & relevant unofficial plug-ins installed & lots of unofficial Mods.

I wrote a guide for installing the Mods for anyone who may need it, it is here (http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Oblivion%2C_Mods_%26_Linux).

Here is a well maintained installation how-to for Ubuntu. I believe it is written by the same person who wrote the how-to thread in this forum:

Yeah, that's the howto I tried and had problems with. It seems a bit out of date, especially since Hardy is around the corner.

just for testing purposes, you might also try OLDblivion. It reduces the specs on oblivion to the point that it will run on just about any i386(?) computer ever made.

Granted, it looks awful at minimum specs, but it runs. http://oldblivion.com/

my post still stands, most gamers do not wanna have to water down a game they can run (quite a bit) better on windows, at least I don't. I bought the game so I want to get every bit out of it!

the game ran in cedega for sure but I had to run it 1280x1024 with no HDR, turn water reflections off and other options I normally run on the highest settings and got serious shuttering. in the tutorial cave at the beginning anytime I was in a shadowy area vs holding a torch I got shuttering as well. (very odd)

when I did finally get outside the game came to a screeching halt slowing down to a slideshow.

I then proceeded to boot over to windows and install and it's been running very smooth again.

my system:
amd x2 4200
evga nvidia 7800gt
2gb ram

btw morrowind rules oblivion in everything but visuals! where's my pole arms? where's my medium armor? where's my endless sandboxing? not to say oblivion doesnt have it's gems (shivering isles) :P
here's a few mods I made for it whenever you do get it running.

I disagree that I had to water down the game compared to it running on Windows. I had very high graphic options set in a high screen resolution, the game looked gorgeous & ran fantastically well, with over 50 mods as well.

I had none of those problems running in Cedega 6.2. Except for the no HDR's, which bothered my not jot.

I think you may be able to set the game up better with official & unofficial patches, as well as Mods.

I ran it well but in a lower resolution than the 7950GT on a 6600 / 128 Mb Ram.

I think your setup was the problem.

There is no accounting for taste, who has the right to tell someone that what they like is no good, & that the reasons that they like it are invalid? If you are doing nothing that hurts anyone else do what ever you like, freedom is such a beautiful concept! :lolflag:

Are there any patches or unofficial mods to make the game run faster other than Oldblivion?
