I made a small blog post containing a simple pic I created specially for the promotion of Free Software, namely the GNU/Linux Operating System

http://www.internetling.com/2008/03/09/anti-virus-software-is-dead-use-linux/ (I also posted it to SU and Digg if anyone wants to bother)

I just want to ask you: Do you agree? Why?

Yes and No. Providing you don't use any DOS or Windows emulators there is very little chance of getting a virus. Using DosBox for example it is possible to get a virus, but this is less likely to cause a problem on a Linux based system, as the viruses have been written to attack DOS/Windows. I found this out after I installed Clamtk, which then found three viruses.

Yeah, so there are basically two layers of 'immunity'.

I disagree.

It makes about as much sense to say Ubuntu is the best anti-virus as to say living in the rich suburbs of America is the best armor for a US soldier in Iraq to wear. You are no longer a US soldier in Iraq if you're in the rich suburbs of America.

Likewise, you are not using anti-virus if you're using Ubuntu--you're using a completely different operating system. This marketing ploy is just a slightly subtler form of "Hey, Windows users--Ubuntu isn't a completely different operating system; it's just Windows-without-problems," which will just lead to more "Ubuntu sucks. I'm going back to Windows!" threads in the Ubuntu Testimonials and Experiences subforum here.

No thanks.

The best anti-virus for Windows users is running as a limited (instead of administrative) user.

Found this funny link on Digg (Digg it here (http://digg.com/linux_unix/With_Linux_Antivirus_Software_is_Dead_PIC)). Just a little amusement for all of us laugh at those still living in the dark ages.

If Windows works for a person, then they shouldn't switch to an OS they don't know...

With a bicycle, car insurance and gas prices are dead. That's... if you're okay using only a bicycle. Pretty much the same deal. My wife and I have gone carless because we can. We know plenty of families for whom a carless lifestyle makes no practical sense. Same can be said for Windows and Ubuntu. Ubuntu does not suit everyone's computing needs/lifestyle.

As you say that i hear every single pc repair techy crying out in pain...

Home user PC's are worse than their commercial counterparts all kinds of nasties ranging from the winxp logon loop malware to users with a bit of knowledge trying to do things for them selves but botching the entire OS.

I will never go back tot hat kind of life again... AND YOU CANT MAKE ME!!!!
