How hard is it to get running in Ubuntu? I'm sure there's no native client, but will the latest version of Wine run it? I won't buy it if it's a big hassle.
Thanks, guys!

P.S. Anyone heard any news on the Linux client for UTIII?

I believe the UT3 client for linux is under development, but dont quote me.
I have CNC3 running under wine. You better have one hell of a computer (on windows or linux.. its an intensely demanding game). I get a better framerate in wine than I did in windows, especially at 1680x1050 resolution.
A big question: what video card do you have? If its Nvidia, than I say go for it. If its ati, ehhh, you may be hit or miss under wine, and if its an intel it prolly wont run under windows either.
Its not too bad, unless cursor support is a big deal to you. Youll have to patch your wine install for full cursor support. I dont really care, so I just left it alone. I had to grab 2 dll's from a website, get a cracked exe, and install the game. Thats it really. If you have an nvidia card, make sure xrandr is working properly. type xrandr in a terminal and post the results here if youre unsure what I mean. Heres the wine appDB page on CNC3 by the way:

I dont know, but for some reason I have no problems playing online, which some claim doesnt work. Good luck...

Well, I'd like to have online functioning as well. I have an 8800GT with an Intel Core2 E4300 and 2GB of DDR800 - I know I can run the game. Actually, I used to play it with a 6800GT (the demo in Windows) and it really wasn't too bad at all. I'm more concerned about bugs and how long it will take to install right.

in reply to UT3, it has hit legal issues (allegedly), though Ryan (Epic's Linux guy) claims he is still working on (which is a very good sign) anyways as usual it will be ready when its ready :(

Like I said, install the game, grab a cracked exe, copy a few dll's and patch wine for cursor support. Your card/setup will handle this game better than mine.
if you have problems with it telling you to insert Cd1, you may need to copy the disc contents to a folder on your desktop...

I installed this game on my dad's computer a little while back, and recent Wine versions should not require a crack anymore. I forgot if I had to use dlls, though. As far as the cursor problem goes, I am working on fixing that, but there are a bunch of difficult issues to fix before I can get any real patches into main Wine.

So I'm new to Ubuntu and Wine and I've got CNC3 running but I cant figure out how to do the cursor patch. I read the instructions on winehq.org but it confuses me and I cant get it to work. I'm using wine 0.9.56. Any suggestions?

has support for C&C3, I played it in wine and on cedega (& in Vista) wine plays it well but it was slower than Vista and the graphics weren't as good (very playable though) but Cedega played it perfectly slightly smoother than windows. I wouldn't normally recommend cedega but for this game it might just be worth it I think online play works in cedega although I never tried.
I also played this 9 months ago so wine may have improved and your experience may be different.

Well, I did finally get around to trying it, and it works passably, but it runs much faster/easier in Windows. Actually, I couldn't turn up the VFX and Shadow sliders past low without getting an all-tan image. With those down, it ran fine, but not near as smooth as in Windows. It's not a big deal, however. I've pretty well played it out and now I'm back to Wesnoth :)
Thanks, everyone!
