Looks like more good news for consumers. This is exciting because now Microsofts dominance is being challenged once again in the mainstream computer market.

Althuogh I'm happy that we're finially seeing some competition in the browser market I don't know why they chose to ship a proprietary browser rather than the open source Firefox.

In Firefox, you can disable this redirection behavior to Google's "I'm feeling lucky" search by entering about:config and either changing the keyword.URL property or setting keyword.enabled to false.
The CNET url is HP to ship Netscape browser on new PCs (http://news.com.com/HP+to+ship+Netscape+browser+on+new+PCs/2100-1032_3-5887648.html?tag=cd.top)

Their reasoning was that netscape has the ability to use both Firefoxes engine and IE's.

I bet their real reason was "AOL chucked a bunch of money at us!".

The enemy of my enemy is my friend ;)
Though I would prefer if it was opera. Netscape was super bloated when I used it.

As I understand it, Netscape 8 is little more than a Firefox rewrite with the IE engine tacked on.
Good for HP giving people a choice again.

If I were to ever buy a prebuilt computer again (and that is a big if) I would probally choose HP. They offer, Linux, Netscape and AMD. I like the fact that they give you choices unlike Sony and Dell. Any PC company that is loyal to just one brand is just asking for trouble in the future.

If I were ever to buy a prebuilt computer (a big negative unless it's a laptop) I would go probably go Toshiba, IBM or Dell, because they're not cheaply made crap like HP or Compaq. Good luck getting phone support from either of them when your Ubuntu laptop takes a dump.

All three of those other computer makers use the same cheaply made crap in their machines. Have you seen the news on Dell's phone support? They are losing customers right and left. Intel makes a crappy processor right now based on old technology that relies on the frontside bus. If you like power hungry processors that bottlekneck at the frontside bus and have to be clocked to 1 gig or more over AMD just to keep up with performance, then by all means use it. My 2.08 GB A64 3200 smokes my brothers 2.6 gb P4. Besides, I know how to troubleshoot a computer, why would I wait on the phone for some idiot who probally knows less about my computer then I do.

I think independent local shops that sell white boxes only are the best bet. Not only are they cheaper than a lot of the branded computers I've seen, most of these shops offer warranty.

True that would probally be the way to buy a lappy.

About a week ago Dell support make the local news here. An elementary school (I think) had purchased a Dell computer and it never arrived and they could not get through to the company. After a couple of days they finally got through but Dell claimed to know nothing about it even though the payment had gone through. Finally, a Dell official told the school that they would look into it.

HP has been really good the last couple of years when it comes to complying with standards, using off the shelf motherboards, power supplies, etc... Nothing to stop you from grabbing some off the shelf parts if you need a replacement out of warranty (or just faster than waiting for service to ship).

My first new laptop will be a HP Ubuntu one.

I have to say I am itching for a laptop, do we know if the HP models pre-loaded with Ubuntu will be available in the U.S. as well? I know Europe and Africa are confirmed...

Netscape? Huh?! I didn't quite understand the value of their revival until I read this:
But it also uses rendering technology found in IE that Firefox does not, allowing Netscape users to completely view some Web pages that do not load fully in Firefox.
...so, I'll buy that for a dollar. I guess as someone else pointed out too, AOL stock ain't a cellar dweller just yet. Time for me to check their ticker...

Netscape is clunky and full of AOL advertising.
It's more fully featured than IE, but I still prefer "vanilla" Firefox.
