(I'm sure this type of post has been done to the death, so forgive me, but I just wanted to find out for myself.)
Admittedly, I don't know a great deal about the inns and outs of Canonical and Ubuntu, but I do know that they prefer to plug it over Kubuntu and Xubuntu. Now, I don't want to ignite a GNOME v KDE v XFCE argument. All I would like to ask is whether people believe that it's time for Canonical to give the same amount of support to Ubuntu's KDE and XFCE siblings?
I'm not a lifelong Linux user, in fact, I only started last summer. It's been interesting learning how it works, getting used to a different type of system and rewarding when I've managed to get things to work using my own initiative. It's nice to have that opportunity. But whilst some people may like to adjust settings of their systems, there are others- and probably the majority of users- who simply want a system that works; a system that allows them to play music, watch DVDs, browse the internet...just the normal things. Whilst all these things are INDEED possible on K/X/Ubuntu, it's not without it's faults. It feels to me- please correct me if I'm wrong- that a lot of innovation is reserved for Ubuntu and whilst Kubuntu seems to have more native applications, Ubuntu certainly feels like more of a complete OS.
I recently switched to using Kubuntu over Ubuntu- I keep both OSs separate. Though this seems pointless- I'm told that they are one and the same system but with different DEs- I like to keep things separate since I disliked having KDE applications clogging my GNOME menus and vice verser. Admittedly, one of the reasons I switched was because I liked the look of KDE and also, many operations can be done through the GUI. I know that one can make each DE look like the other but I'd much rather use the native environment.
Anyway, the original point of this was to find out how many people believe that it's time for Kubuntu and Xubuntu to be given as much air time as Ubuntu. Wouldn't it be nice if the same amount of resources dedicated to Ubuntu were given to Kubuntu and Xubuntu as well? I think it would be great if for example, Dell was not only selling laptops and desktops with Ubuntu but also with Kubuntu and say low specification ones with Xubuntu.
To my not-so-well-informed self, it just seems that the same amount of energy isn't being dedicated to each flavour equally and I think that doing so, would benefit the Ubuntu family greatly. Each is a compliment the other and each ensures that people can experience Ubuntu in their own way. :-k
Just a though- that I know has already been done- but I'd just like to know.
Many Thanks.
