I had used ubuntu on another computer and now that I have a new computer, instead of duel booting it, I decided to use a Virtual PC provided by windows to allow other operating systems at the same time.
I got the virtual pc working and everything was going fine, and I put the disk in and restarted it and chose the "boot from cd" option. It started booting and then went to a black screen with blue vertical lines on it and has been there ever since.
Does anyone know what I did wrong?

I think I read about something like there being a bug in VirtualPCs video handling so you have to tell the installer to run in safe video mode, or using the "alternate" text mode installer (I forget which).
Alternatively, you could use a better virtualiser instead. VirtualBox and VMware come to mind, and both have free download versions.

i tried using the safe mode and either it wasn't working at all or it was just loading insanely slowly to not load within an hour.
I'll try one of the other vitual computers that you mentioned. Thanks

Ok, I got the virtual machine working and it wants a description of the OS. Would Ubuntu 7.10 best be described as Linux 2.2, Linux 2.4, or Linux 2.6?

If you can't get virtual pc working like you want, I would highly recommend using InnoTek VirtualBox (http://www.virtualbox.org).
VirtualBox runs on windows hosts, as well as OSX and Linux hosts. AND it's open source and free!!
Virtual box enabled me to move away from windows as my workstation. Give it a try!!

Now I need to know how to change the directory where the cd-rom drive is mounted on my virtualbox version of Ubuntu.
This is what the manual for virtualbox is telling me that i need to do and they just assume that i know how to change a directory and i don't even know what one is. Help anyone?
