I bought a Dell laptop and the 1st thing I did was take off that damn "Designed for XP" sticker.

http://www.wrq.com/images/xp_logo.gif

I like to tinker and I work at a sign shop with all kinds of printing equiptment. So Im gonna make this:

http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/14/designedforubuntu5qu.jpg

Might look like this:

http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/6692/dscf16314zi.th.jpg (http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/6692/dscf16314zi.jpg)

Ide like to make these if people want 'em. :)
Anyone know where I can get 'em made up like real foil stickers? I can make a limited few at work but if lots of people like 'em It will get hard.

My old laptop had a sticker like that, and it pretty much came off by itself. Also, there are commonly available products like Goo-Gone that can clear off adhesive residues.

I made a sticker for my laptop that looks great and has lasted for months:

1. Print the sticker out on an inkjet on photo paper
2. Put clear packing tape over the printed area
3. Carefully cut the sticker out of the sheet
4. Glue to case

Very easy, looks pro.

I'd love one of those. I recently built my own computer, and it currently only has an atari sticker, an AMD64 sticker, and five Christian hardcore/metal band stickers (the Crimson Thorn sticker looks really good on that case). Having something that advertises my favorite OS would be awesome.

If you figure out how to make 'em, I'll pay for a few.

So where do I send the money? ;) No, seriously... Maybe Canonical should make those and attach them with its Shipit service. After all, those would bring nice touch of added value. I for one am willing to pay for those stickers and even the CDs they keep sending to me. It could cover some expenses that Canonical suffers because of their "free" CDs.

Sending those stickers separately would cost more than the sticker itself. I would be really surprised to see lots of breezy CDs to give away and stickers in the same box. Well, who knows...

Alright, I'm subscribing to this thread. And if you actually get these made, and they're all foil-ish and stuff, I will be quite joyful, because it really is true. I designed and built this computer with Ubuntu driver support in mind.

Ok, what do you think the price will be? I can't say I'd pay more than $5 for one of those. Then again...........I might...........well, that is, if I HAD more than $5. But I don't. Yeah.

I'm one of those people who loves to advertise things that he finds useful - linux is the most useful tool for computers that I have yet to find. Ok, I need to sleep. Every time I try to write this, it gets too long. Good night.

What dimensions are they? Do you have a vector-based image in an Adobe Illustrator accepted format? Is each colour in a different layer? If the answer to all is yes (even if only the first 2 are yes) and my school has an appropriate die-cutter I might make some as an assignment for my flexography class http://www.google.com/search?q=define%3Aflexography I could also distribute the ones I print.

Im changing the design of the sticker a little. It will still look similar but Im taking out the "Designed For" part. Im also making up some variants. kUbuntu and such.

So much intrest has been cool. Im going to try to contact the proper people to get them shipped with CDs. If that happens they (Canonical) will probally get them printed themselves and I will ship to others.

Honestly it seems like it will be a huge undertaking. How should I go about selling them? Should I start a e-commerce site with credit card ordering and all?

Umm wouldn't it be nicer if you just get the linux one and stick it over the XP one?

But then you could argue with yourself that it's REALLY designed for XP, you're just trying to fool people into thinking it's for ubuntu, and then you'd feel dishonest and a whole ton of other immoral things would happen, such as you being compelled to reinstall Windows (don't worry, they still do exorcisms - you can get help for those problems).

So, in the end, it's best to not allow yourself any leeway into thinking that Windows will work better on your machine. Because we all know that the only reason that Windows would work better is if your hardware only supports Windows specific drivers and you haven't the time to try every driver available to see which ones work.

Yeah. Taking off the sticker first is a better idea. On second thought, build your own computer(s), and for laptops, make sure you buy the linux supported ones. I would hope that those don't come with the "Designed for WinXP" logo melted into the casing like the Windows specific ones do.

If you guys want Ill post the 2 hi-res K/Ubuntu stickers I made in .PNG format. Otherwise Im learning Inkscape and am reworking them in .SVG format. Will post them after that. Maybe this weekend.

That'd be cool, the .svg ones will be nice to have too though, really great work, take your time!

You can buy keyboards with that done already, but with tux actually properly printed on in the first place... from thinkgeek iirc

EDIT - can't see it on thinkgeek, must've been somewhere else.

umm.. no.. because then the XP one is still there. The whole point of my thing was to get rid of the XP sticker. I don't have the Ubuntu one yet.

http://img467.imageshack.us/img467/2056/designedforubuntu1sm.png http://img467.imageshack.us/img467/8706/designedforkubuntu4ro.png

I am unhappy with these. Mostly the Kubuntu one and some text issues. Hence the learning of Inkscape. :)
Printing these at the right size should look nice though. :)

The backgrounds are transperent so it will show whatever image/color paper you put behind it.

I should be able to get the SVGs up this weekend. I have a tutor. :)

umm.. perhaps because I don't have XP on my laptop. Perhaps I don't want to have the stickers being to high as to potentially touch the lcd when closed.

And to reiterate, I don't have the Ubuntu sticker yet. How am I supposed to "not see it?"

With a .svg (Scaleable Vector Graffic) you can resize an image to any size without any quality loss.

As far as using it on a website, Im not sure. Not my logo. I do belive its trademarked but as long as its used in the right spirit I think youll be fine. ;)

Well hell. Where should we go from here? Make the ?ubuntu variants and get them up on the Wiki? Printing them now for me will be a little hard with the holidays and a full sleeve tatoo to get done. ;)

I'm working on a horizontal one for web sites, etc. Why dont I post that then you can have a look at everything and tweak it all (taking into account any feedback) and then repost with the new versions.

I can probably work on getting these printed if people want to go in that direction, I have some time and know of some printers, etc.

Let me know

Though I think GIMP would be able to "handle" it, I strongly recommend Inkscape. GIMP would just ignore all the vector information once you rasterize, so forget about toying with it. You'll have to give GIMP the size you want it to be rasterized @ the very open of the file.

Just try out Inkscape... You'll like it. Use synaptic to install.

Definitely a lighter take on the sticker idea... download inkscape from the repository (use synaptic, easy and i can't remember the package name) to make svg files, there is a fairly comprehensive tutorial set with it that should get you started. I've noticed that as well, it could be that the image viewer doesn't fully implement the png format, or maybe inkscape exports using a bastardized version of png and firefox uses the same... anyone know for sure? is there a fix? or just don't use image viewer? haha

I then carefully cut it out and removed the label backing a placed it right on my laptop. For the cost and effort that it took, I think it looks great. Sorry that the picture is not great. Actually, Image Viewe does has an option to set the background as a checker pattern, a specified color, or the windows background, while Firefox always set the background to white if none is specified.

I emailed the copyright people at Canonical and asked about the logo usage, etc. I sent a sample along with the email. Their response was very friendly and they indicated only that somewhere on the sticker we needed to indicate that ubuntu is a trademark of Canonical Limited... I've included the full response below:

We have the following rules regarding our Logo: (It looks fine, you
should just add (b).)

The Ubuntu logo and name are registered trademarks of Canonical. We're
happy to grant permission for you to use the logo under the following
conditions:

(a) You observe the logo usage rules described on our website at:
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/ubuntu/TrademarkPolicy ;

(b) Somewhere on the product you recognise that Ubuntu is a trademark
of Canonical Limited.

The logo usage rules basically boil down to "use the logo as is -
don't change it" and I don't expect they should cause you any
trouble.

Kind regards
Marilize

So basically as long as this change gets made and the logo doesn't get mangled anyone can go ahead and see about getting these things printed and what not.

I would do this but I'm afraid that just printing it onto paper and then gluing that on to my laptop will look cheesy. :???:I have an idea that you might find useful.

A few years back, on my old laptop, I noticed that the area where I tended to rest my hand was worn down so much that the plastic was a different color and it just looked bad. When I bought my new laptop a year or so ago I wanted to prevent this. I had an idea to buy some clear shelf liner (plastic with very light adhesive). I cut out the shapes on either side of my touchpad and affixed the plastic to cover the areas where my hands might touch often. It worked great. Then I had an idea. I printed out my name and contact info and put it under the plastic on one side. Later I printed out one of the ubuntu sticker ideas from this thread and put it under the other side next to the Pentium M and ATI stickers that were already there (I peeled off the WinXP one). It looks quite good and I have had no wear problems. I have replaced the clear plastic protector a few times (like when I moved and typed up a new address, etc). It's quick, easy and cheap. It also looks pretty good.

This reminds me of the days when AMD didn't have stickers with CPUs. They opened a web site so people could order all kind of AMD stuff (like stickers, pens etc.) for free. Now that was good marketing. I guess it was a success as next time I bought a CPU from AMD (a year later), it had sticker included. Anyways, I'm definitely ordering a few of these!

Still I would prefer doing business with Canonical, it could cover some expenses from "free CDs" and make some bounty money. :)

Excellent, thank you very much for doing this.

Also, I think it'd be a great idea to start a new thread and come up with some original ideas, maybe first person to come up with something start the thread? Or maybe metalmusic you could start it since you had to original idea that got us all going you could start a new thread asking for ideas?

Ubuntu or Canonical really needs to work on the shop, the cafepress one just isnt cutting it. one idea i read that i really liked was creating a character for each release and making stuffed animals out of them and selling them as sort of collectors items. for example the hedgehog, badger, drake...then little things like case stickers are a big hit as we've seen.

I totally agree. I wonder what their stance on this is. 1 person from their staff could be in charge of it. A marketing/merchandising person.

I kinda look at it like a rock band. If you start a band you need merch. People love merch and will buy tons of it if they like your band. I think we like Mark's band. :)

good analogy :) there was this one band i liked many years ago and i saw them at their show...i bought like 2 of their cd's, a shirt, some stickers and signed their mailing list. merch is just another way of connecting with something you really like and want to support, whether its a band, linux distro, favorite movie, or superhero. the community spirit Ubuntu has is one of the advantages I feel they have over other distros...so these are just the little things we can do to help it flourish :)

My computer really was designed for Ubuntu.
Would love to get some stickers for my pc, but I don't know where.
Everything in there was planned with quality and confidence in the use of a linux distro, preferably Ubuntu.:D

Wow! Nice stickers!
My computers front has a bunch of stickers and i think I'll continue to slap more and more stickers on there until the front is fully crammed with stickers to look like a traveling bag. Only with computer related stickers.

How about a sticker that doesn't have that division, but instead has Ubuntu a little bit up. Near the bottom and to the right it would have "Trademark of Canonical" in smaller letters.
Still in Vertical since i like those the best because i have a desktop micro pc.
Although for laptops the landscape one would definitly be better!

I liked the "Designed for Ubuntu" Stickers a lot because my computer really was designed for it.
Maybe a sticker that said Designed For and Powered By Ubuntu

I'll try to make some in InkScape but I'm pretty noobish in using it.

Look at the old posts in this same thread, myself and several other people posted versions of the sticker design in .svg (inkscape, etc.) format. Feel free to download some of those and play with them, it might be simpler for you than trying to start from scratch.

Also, as far as the copyright text, as I posted awhile back, I have been in contact with canonical and they requested, as per their policy, that the stickers contain some copyright text (copyright canonical inc.) so this really should be added to the stickers as soon as possible.

Why did you bought a notebook having sticker "Designed for Win XP"? I am asking this because these machines are specially designed for Windows OS and they are optimized for it. Never buy a machine having this sticker on it if you want to use Linux. Brands like IBM and HP gives a lot of support for Linux. I can say this because I a register developer of IBM's site and I found a lot of info about Linux on there site. Dell don't give support for Linux.

Those stickers are a generic advert for Windows OS. I work at a computer shop where we build custom laptops (high end speciality kit). When we build them part of the agreement with windows we have is to place an advert sticker proclaiming the OS installed and all its greatnes. When we re-order the stickers they come in different forms Sometimes saying designed for Windows. sometimes just saying Windows XP, or Win XP 64 (if we want to give the custy huge headaches with bad drivers and poorly prepped OS).

Whilst i don't doubt some laptops are optimised for windows, i do think mostly its just a sticker.

no your wrong
If your computer comes with window$ pre-installed
the you MUST find a "design for xp" on it
it is a part of the contract that Dell, IBM, compaq etc.. signed with micro$oft

To make a parralel it is juste like the Intel music in each tv advert for a computer with an intel cpu.

The IBM don't really support Linux, they don't really support linux
We have some cases reported in tt-hardware.com
that some user can't get any RMA from IBM because their OS was linux.
Because "they don't support linux as the default operating system for IBM laptop so it could be the reason of the computer failure"
Are you still pretending that IBM support linux?
Because they give ubuntu DB2 certificate?

Well i'm not sure :-/

its funny you say that.. I have a toshiba laptop which I installed Ubuntu on. ran into a small problem with it and called tech support. when I explained to them that I had wiped windows and put Linux on the system and asked if that would be a problem since the sticker said "designed for Windows" this is what they told me.

Tech: It doesn't matter what operating system is on the computer. The only thing we are concerned about is the hardware. did you change any of that?

Me: no, it is still the OEM hardware

Tech: great. let me fire up my linux server so I can help you better. Oh and so you know, we didnt' choose those stickers, Microsoft wants us to put those on all computers we sell, it's there way of saying they own us.

Me: Microsoft doesn't own me or my computer. if I want to strap C4 to it I can

Tech: *laughter* exactly. you bought the computer you do what you want with it. Now what seems to be the problem???

So as you can see just because it says "designed for Windows" or "Windows XP installed doesn't mean that you have to use Windows on the computer. If that was the case then Linux (all flavors), Mac osX, etc.. wouldn't be able to run on the computer at all unless it was designed for it. thats one thing Micro$oft has yet to do. design a HDD that will only allow Windows to work on it. and as far as I know, there is no way to do that....

Funny man. I had the opposite reaction with my Linksys router a week ago.

Ive had problems since up grading firmware. I was a couple of versions behind so I figured Id update. The update isnt tied to any OS at all. Its done right through any browser. Since the update it drops connections every 6hrs or so.

I deal with it for a couple of weeks then decide to call tech support, really just to let them know about the issue. I figured I could go to an older firmware.

I call and instantly I get someone who sounds Indian. My expectations lower instantly. Im sorry. With tech/customer support moving over to India its become more of a pain. Only because the 1st person you talk to doesnt really know what your talking about. They read from computer prompts. I know this for a fact.

This is what happened here. After I slowly and clearly tell her my problem, she backs me up.

She starts by saying "OK. Is you computer on." Yes.
"OK. Go to the green button in the lower left of the screen." :-D I dont run windows. This is a hardware issue not tied to the OS. It was fine before the firmware upgrade. You could hear the gears come to a hault as she realized that there wasnt a ready response for my answer.

After a min she comes back she says "We cannot support any OS other than windows." Its not an issue involving the OS. Its a hardware issue.

We go around in circles for about 5 mins about this and Im thinking: (Doesnt Linksys use linux on their hardware?)
After that I get her superviser who was a very knowledgeable and cool Indian guy. He had the same idea as me. To downgrade the firmware. Told me where to get it (an FTP site) and understood that I was really just trying to report a problem. He said his name was "Larry" I laughed and when I asked he told me his real name was Sandeep. Funny because I work with a guy with the same name. :)

So I guess always try to get a super right off the bat and just email in bugs. :)

This goes right along with a different thread I made a response to dealing with the stability of Breezy.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=114288

I have found that most of the time the freezes are caused by hardware not the software itself. unfortunately we live in a world where close to 90% of all the hardware is designed with Windows in mind. until allthe manufacturers get on the bandwagon and allow more linux compatibility this will probably be the case.

Which means 90% of your support techs will automatically try to convince you that you should Use Windows because their company is do lazy to try and use or even configure Linux.

Some older computers (pre law suite era) used to not let you install anything but win98 that came with them. I had this troubel on about 5 compaq desktops. They would only let you install the win98 version that came with the PC.
Of course I didnt try to low level format. But I did try to use the format from Regular Win98ME.
Knowing M$ they surely do want to do that, but I dont think they will attemp it anytime soon due to the anti-trust law suites.

Microsoft's FAT Patent Rejected
By Michael Singer

The U.S. Patent Trademark Office has rejected all claims to patents for a Windows file format held by Microsoft.

Under a reexamination process initiated earlier this year by the recently formed Public Patent Foundation (PUBPAT), The USPTO rejected all claims of Microsoft's technology, which includes its internally developed FAT Allocation Table (FAT) file system (define). The FAT file system is one of the technologies Microsoft has placed in its royalty-bearing licensing portfolio.

<small portion of info snipped>

"The Patent Office has simply confirmed what we already knew for some time now, Microsoft's FAT patent is bogus," Dan Ravicher,

well, so they win one for flash cards. Here is there own discription of what these patents they were dealing with covered. personally I'm not worried I.

source: http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/ip/tech/fat.asp

Today, the FAT file system has become the ubiquitous format that is used for interchange of media between computers. Since the advent of inexpensive, removable flash memory, the FAT file system has become the format that is also used between digital devices.

A license for manufacturers of certain consumer electronics devices—Pricing for this license is $0.25 per unit for each of the following types of devices that use removable solid state media to store data:
* Portable digital still cameras
* Portable digital video cameras
* Portable digital still/video cameras
* Portable digital audio players

I dunno, I would be very very worried If I were a Linux or even a Unix vendor given Microsoft's long history of extremely aggressive and anti-competitive behavior. I think the outlook is even scarier for Linux since Microsoft is having trouble competing with it right now and is going to have even more trouble as time goes on (I'm talking mainly about servers here, which is where the most trouble with FAT would come in).

Microsoft has set out to destroy Linux and open-source software in general and once the dust has settled a little I almost guarantee you that page will be updated (read the fine print at the bottom).

Remember, the calling card of a destructive monopoly is that they act friendly until they've eliminated their competition, only then does the nasty side really come out.

WOW! An hour later and I finally reach the end of this thread. Lets see if I can make it longer :). Cool discussion though. I peeled off my XP sticker while reading. I need some of these stickers too. I'll try and navigate the German site... Keep us posted on the shipit option - though I probably won't order any that way. It would be nice if they would offer more merchandise. I like the idea of the stuffed animals. I'll get 'em for my kids every 6 months. Maybe McDonalds can do up an ubuntu happy meal - food, OS, merchandise. Of course bad food and good OS maybe shouldn't go together.

This thread is kind of what I imagine open source to be - lots of cool people with a vision working collaboratively to make it happen. That's why I'm here (though I'm probably not that cool and certainly not creative).

EDIT: Okay, I just tried to order some using the translated web site. It wouldn't add to a cart. If you go through the original site in German it does work. So it would appear that if you don't read German you will have to go through in English to get the idea but you will have to order via the original page. At least that is what worked for me.

I think the stickers are a great idea! Actually failing with my first attempt of ubuntu on my desktop I got a laptop so i could run it, runs much better with ubuntu than it did with windows.

Safest way to remove the already added stickers without damaging equipment is to use ronsonol aka lighter fluid It evaporates quickly doesnt damage the system like goo gone would. Lets the stickers wipe off. Really great to use on any sticker.

Anyway I am going to try to decipher that german page to get some stickers.
