Ok, so i have mythbuntu. and when i try to start up mythtv it starts up fine but when i select watch tv it says
MythTV is alread using all available iputs for the channel you selected. If you want to watch an in-progress recording, selcet one for the play back menu. If you want to watch live TV, cancel one of the in-progress recordings from the delete menu.
i've never used this before now so i don't know what it's wanting me to do...

Make sure you have configured your tuners in mythtv-setup, as well as attatched them to a video source

It would help to know a bit about your setup. What version of Mythbuntu? What capture card?
First step is noted above, run mythtv-setup and verify everything. You may want to try a reboot as well...I have had my capture card lock up once in a while.

Maybe MythTV is not for you... A capture/tuner card is what allows you to watch TV: The main purpose of MythTV.
You'll need one of these, and you'll need to set it up correctly before mythtv is of any use

well is there anything like mythtv that doesn't need a capture card or anything?

The capture card is what takes your TV signal and turns it into something the computer can work with. This is usually from a coax cable that comes out of your wall and feeds into the cable box or TV.
Is there a place on your computer where you can connect the Cable TV cord from the wall? If not, then you will need to buy a card to do this for you.

You can use mythtv just for viewing videos that you have already recorded/downloaded/ripped. But if you want to watch Tv with it you will need a capture card.
