hey, i apologise alot if this has already been asked but i must ask
i currently run a E6600, 8800GTS and 4GB of geil
quite a lovely system tbh, loved building it etc sept for windows...

i'm a gamer :/ so windows is quite necessary
however i had a little practice a bit back on 7.04 with my 8800 etc and loved it all! was quite made up on how it ran steam using wine etc
however i couldn't use it long, my hard drive soon had an eppy and had to get a new one
is anyone else here a gamer with a similar spec to mine and quite loving ubuntu atm?
id obviously be running the latest ver etc
i'm a CSS player at heart so if someone here plays this, and is running it using wine could u gt back to me?

id love to make the switch to ubuntu!
oh and has anyone had god happening with ventrilo and ubuntu? =]

well you will have some problems with direct x if you switch so check your games if they use opengl you can make the total switch. If your games rely on heavy directx like crysis dualboot. Actually I recommend dual boot. I have a friend who does the same thing between osx and windows. If you have ati card know ati and ubuntu is like George Bush and intelegence they don't get along! Try assult cube, nexiuz and eboard [chess game} exneo out!

I'm torn in answering this.

There are tons of "Get X game running on Ubuntu" threads in the gaming section. A quick search would have found that.

Next, would it kill you to actually use, you know, real spellings in your posts? There is no way anyone is going to take gaming on Ubuntu seriously if our posts make us look like we can barely communicate.

I'm a gamer, and I can actually use actual sentences and spelling to express myself. You should try it. Quite liberating.

The actual answer to your question is that with the right drivers and a little bit of work, Counterstrike:Source will run on Ubuntu. It runs on Wine, Crossover Office, and Cedega...although I have found that Steam games work the best overall on Crossover office.

Ventrilo can also run, but you need to pass a command to wine via the terminal to make sure that you have sound in both the game and in Vent.

its the OpenGL, Nvidia has much better OpenGL support than ATI. its less noticeable on a windows machine because windows things use primarily DirectX.

If you have ati card know ati and ubuntu is like George Bush and intelegence they don't get along!

That was entirely unnecessary. I hate the man as much as anyone else, but there's no rationalization for bringing it up in the middle of a gaming thread. Especially when you insult someone's intelligence but fail to spell the word intelligence correctly. Please for the sake of ubuntu leave politics/political figures out of completely unrelated posts.

That said, Evil, please look at winehq.com and search for your games in the appdb stuff. You may also want to check the cedega compatibility site if you are ok with buying software to play games. Your question has been posted many times, so search for your particular games mentioned on the forums.

Is it off-topic to ask what the topic of this tread is?

Is it off-topic to ask what the topic of this tread is?

It's only off-topic to ask such if the question is proposed between Monday and Wednesday by someone with a loony toons avatar.

..ONOZ!

Anyway. The title, 'gaming and ubuntu' and the message content make it quite clear. Or at least, they did. hehe :D

You'd like to run windows games slower, with wine program or stuffs like that ? Windows games work better with windows, since it is designed for.

Otherwise, there is lot of great games available for linux ! and most linux games are quite good enough to have no need of windows games, that are in stores
