i just installed ubuntu 7.10 yesterday

i have an nvidia 5500 graphics card

i have the restricted drivers for nvidia installed

when i go into appearence preferences and click the visual effects tab and try to select a different visual effect setting other than none it gives me the message "Desktop effects could not be enabled"

i just relised that when on my first boot it told me that linux was running in low graphics mode could this be causing my problem? if so how do i run in high graphics mode?

Click The "Configure" Button Instead Of Continue

And Configure Graphics Again.

Resolution - Monitor -And Graphics - {Note: When Configuring Graphics At This Time The Graphics Should Be Set To "nv" Driver}\

Hope This Helps

The best way, from my experience, to install/configure Nvidia drivers in Ubuntu is to use a program called Envy.

Download it at http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html

Install it, and run it. (It will be in the Programs Menu under System Tools)

Goto: System -->Administration -->Software Sources

Under "Ubuntu Software" tab
-->Check all the checkboxes

Under "Updates" tab
--> check all the checkboxes

then go back and then try to enable it again,
