View Full Version : Windows don't remember their position or status

I recently enabled compiz again, and now, windows don't seem to remember whether they were maximized the last time they were brought up, or whether they should be maximized period. Like when I signed into AIM through Pidgin, the "enter password" window is always maximized, which is really annoying. When I run a script that opens a couple spreadsheets and a text file, gedit starts maximized, while the spreadsheets are the same size I left them at. When I start AmaroK on my third workspace, it's not maximized like I left it, and it's slightly into the fourth. Any idea what the problem might be?

I have the same problem under compiz--but not with all windows. I've been using devilspie to try to fix it, but it feels more like a workaround rather than a solution. If anyone comes up with a general solution to this, please share.

but not with all windows.Yeah, me too. The OO.o spreadsheets open properly, and there could be others, I haven't checked so thoroughly.
If anyone comes up with a general solution to this, please share.Yes, please do!

Man, is Compiz glitchy. I turned off Snapping Windows, but the windows still stick to edges. Sometimes I can lose the top bar above the top panel, and have to go down to the bottom panel and Move the window that way. And some other times, if I move a large window that isn't quite the right size, it'll seem have a seizure of indecision between sticking to the bottom or the top panel?

Me too - windows always want to stick to the edges, even with the option turned off :(. At least they remember their size though :).

So your windows remember their size... I wonder what the difference is that makes yours work right... :?

Do you have Wobbly Windows turned on?
If so navigate to Wobbly Windows → General → Snap Inverted and turn that option off. This will prevent windows from adhering to the screen edges.
Still noodling your other windows-going-wonky issue. Thinking there's a way to fix it, I just can't yank it outta my brain just yet.

That seemed to fix the clingy issue, Therion! Thanks!
Let me know when you think of the solution for windows not remembering their position/status.
By the way, the Pidgin buddy list window remembers how it needs to be, but not the window for entering the password (that's always maximized for some reason).

Do you have Place Windows enabled from the compiz settings? This worked for me. (Window placement: Smart)

This is "One Of" by BIGGEST moans about the Ubuntu (Linux) from end.
So many programs will just open up where they like or in stupid positions, and never remember where they were when you closed them.
Compiz (mentioned above) helps, and I have mine set to centre, as in the middle of the screen is where I want a window to open normallly.
I tried Smart, but it put things in daft places just to fit them in.
But, there are programs Compiz just does not seem to affect and never remember where they were when you closed them.
Also they don't remember their size either.
Catfish is a stupid one, nice prog, but it opens up too small to use it, so you drag it out into a usable layout size, close it, then when you run it again, it's back to the stupid size again.
If anything else, this annoys me, as it would be so eary to fix, and is a problem that should not exist, and (from my experience) does not appear to happen in Windows (or if it does, not enough to notice it)
If you are going to write an app.........
Make sure your program remembers it's size and window position when you close it, to stop the user having to resize/reposition the dam thing every time it's run.....
Too much to ask?

I totally agree with PiggiePaul ;)
No more words to say.

I might just turn off Compiz entirely (yet again) until this problem is worked out. I like to have my Firefox window and my Pidgin buddy list on the same viewport, neither maximized, and both taking up a certain amount of the screen (mostly Firefox). It's a pain to keep having to adjust this every time I start 'em up. AmaroK, too.

Turning all desktop effects off has solved the problem for me - I'm not bothered about having lots of fancy window effects, I'd rather just have regular windows that do what I tell them to do ;).

cough go to effects manager click on preferance than return to default that should help

I've managed to get it almost working - Using the normal desktop effects setting, I changed the placement mode setting in the Place plugin to 'random', but of course the problem with that is that windows don't remember any placement settings, it's all... random :). Oh well, back to the drawing board I guess...
