Due to the legalities, I don't think you will be able to explore the subject on this forum much at all.

It won't take you much of a search to find a hardware database of what does & doesn't work.

I can't really add anymore than that.

This forum is really more dedicated to people troubleshooting issues related to Apple hardware, and as such might not be of very much use to you. I know that Lifehacker somewhat recently (http://lifehacker.com/software/hack-attack/build-a-hackintosh-mac-for-under-800-321913.php) covered the topic. Maybe that thread will be of more use to you.

Let me know how it goes; this is a passing interest of mine as well (save that I want to use Leopard Server.)
