hi there :-) the best (imho) open source shooter has been released in a new version :-)

check out the screens and the videos at http://www.alientrap.org/nexuiz/
And of course the download link ;-) have fun fragging! (the game looks much better when turning on some effects, but it can kill your frames, so test out whats best for your computer).

ah, and of course, digg it :-)

Such a sweet upgrade. I can't play with everything on MAX anymore; had to ditch HDR/Bloom and World Dynamic Lights/Shadows.

Ultimate runs playable on a 7600go 256 Nvidia card,

But set it to high the coronas and such look quite beautiful, so maybe ultimate is just for the fun of the look.

Yes, interface looks nice.

So, how do you "install" it, then? Docs say nothing I can use. I dl'd and unzipped the 2.3-2.4 patch to my Desktop. It has binaries. I run the nexuiz-linux-x86_64-glx and It finds my player settings and my autoexec.cfg I have no player models, a few gun models, no sound exept ambient and machine gun. Weapons, ammo, projectiles, hook is rainbow tetraeders. Nexuiz doesn't find the maps i have installed.

***EDIT***
Well, it finds some maps, some maps don't have textures, or sky.
***EDIT***

Where shall i put the binary? Where do I put the libraries. (Please don't tell me 'anywhere', I want a nice clean filesystem. I don't even know where the original 2.3 is.) How do I link models and sound? How do I add 2.4 to the KDE menu?
Can I just delete the versions I dont use?

I'd like to keep 2.3 in parallell.

Ultimate sure does look sweet. I wished fglrx had Crossfire support, or at least overclocking.

You don't have to install nexuiz. all you have to do is extract it into a directory, and launch the game from there. The game data has do be in the same folder than the executable (it is that way when you extract the game). So, you can place the binary anywhere you want, as long as the data is in the same place.

If you dont know where your 2.3 is, then it's probably installed via apt-get. I would recomend that you uninstall it and only play with your extracted zip file, to make sure that there are no conflicts.

It's a shame that performance hasn't increased as it did going from 2.2 to 2.3. Performance regressions will actually be apparent for many of us:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=4433354&postcount=68

I'm also not keen on the face lift. I think I'll stay with 2.3 a while longer...

This should help on your way: http://gaming.gwos.org/doku.php/guides:64bit:nexuiz

if you're on KDE, then instead of alacarte open KDE menu editor and use the info to make your own launcher.

Is there any way of pulling this from the repositories so it will update using update manager?

you don't have to wait. The "benchmark" you just saw is flawed. The normal and ultimate settings in nexuiz changed from 2.3 to 2.4. For example, reflexions were added, and a few other things. So, ultimate on 2.4 looks even better than on 2.3, of course this has a price.

I shall state my question less vaguely and in more length:
You noticed the "" around "install"? :) I DID NOTICE that i had extracted binaries. What do you call the process of dl, extract, putting it in the right part of the file system, (linking libraries, writing shell scripts), configuring, compiling and making a program to actually work? I installed 2.3 via adept-manager, a very helpful app that hides this wonderful process, making me (and maybe lots of ubuntu users) kind of handicapped in these situations. (There are more non-repo apps I'd like to install.) I extraced with Ark and ran Nexuiz from the folder i got and launched from there. Not changing anything, it looks like in the README. The folder data/ contains datapatch20080229.pk3 (Archive zip) I launched Nexuiz with this zipped or unzipped. Is this .pk3 suppose to upgrade?

Like most of my ~/. directories .nexuiz/ does not contain the nexuiz binary. I'd like Nexuiz to be accessible for other users (although not a priority). There's a nexuiz.bin in /usr/lib/games/nexuiz/ and a nexuiz shell script in /usr/games. Can I just rename and replace? When I copy just the binary to my .nexuiz/ and launch I get a black screen with the message "You have reached this menu due to missing or unlocatable content/data." (....) The same message I got when I tried to run the 2.4-beta I extracted to /opt.

So: How do I merge the 2.4 files and folders with the 2.3 ones? (I dl:ed the 2.4 upgrade patch, shouldn't it upgrade?) Maybe this can be solved with links hard or soft...

I followed the link: http://gaming.gwos.org/doku.php/guides:64bit:nexuiz
dl:ed the full 2.4 and followed instructions. (Well, I used Ark and copied my existing maps to the data folder) Same result. sdl or glx.

I've now realized that (just rushed to bench the new release), though I feel that it's irrelevant. 2.4 is clearly better in the 1024x768 benchmarks than 2.3 at similar (maybe slightly lower) settings, which should be great news. Don't get me wrong, I like Nexuiz, very much. I simply don't understand why this gain is reversed at a higher resolution...

PS. http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=4438496&postcount=69

Hi, nexuiz 2.4 is working, looking good, problem solved. Don't know how excactly, but I renamed ~/.nexuiz/data/dlcache and started nexuiz from the shell. I also learned that "cl_movement 0" makes movement smoother on a 2.3 server.

My last post seems a little unfriendly :(

I know this game is available in the repositories, but why hasn't auto-update popped up?

i agree that Nexuiz is one of the nest FPS games out there, heck i even like it better than doom3 and quake4, but i have this problem for which i have searched everywhere and can't find an answer for, the audio dies after like 10 mins of gameplay and does not come back unless I restart Nexuiz, I tried various audio settings but none of them fix this for me, anybody have any ideas why?

The version in the repos is 2.3, at least, it is in Hardy.

It runs perfectly fine from the zip flie, though. Well, fine as far as I can tell. I tried finding a match last night (2AM EST) but most available servers were dead, so I got my buttocks handed to me by the bots. :)

hmmm, you try to run it in aoss mode?

sudo apt-get install alsa-oss

then run nexuix as this

aoss nexuiz

(or whatever your nexuiz application is ln'ed to or such).

Not the original poster - but same problem of audio not working after ~10 minutes.

aoss ./nexuiz-linux-glx.sh
does nothing to prevent the audio from dying.

On my computer instant action level 15 dies after a few seconds in game... does this happen for anyone else?

Also, the FAQ included with the 2.4 binary says a few things about sound problems.
