I'm going to start building my first Mythbuntu HTPC system in about a week. I'm wondering if there is any reason to use the 8.04 Alpha 2 version instead of good 'ole 7.10. Is the current Alpha 2 release stable enough to use? Will this make it easier than upgrading from 7.10 later on?

My prior Linux experience is moderate. I have a simple 7.10 Ubuntu system running at home as a file / print server and general fooling around. I don't mind a little project / learning experience with an Alpha version if there are compelling benefits but don't want to get into a can of worms.

Thanks for any insight.

I would use v7.10 to begin with and upgrade to v8.04 later (about Aug/Sep) when it's had time to settle down. Certainly wait for the beta version.

If there is something you really need in 8.04, you might try it. But if this is going to be used a lot, I would go with 7.10.

I am using 7.10, and if I get it to where it works for everything I need, I might not upgrade at all.

8.04 will be officially released next month. You can go with 7.10 for stability now, and changes to myth in 8.04 will probably be backported to 7.10. I still run 6.10 for my primary myth systems... works fine for me..

Changes to things like MCC are too drastic, don't expect them to be backported. We'll try to have mythtv itself backported and mythplugins. For any other of the nicer things about 8.04, you'll have to upgrade.
