I'm a linux newb and I recently, after many hours/days of work, got ubuntu running on my macbook santa rosa. Unfortunately, I let the update manager update the kernel and I think it overwrote everything.

I had been following the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBook_Santa_Rosa

and downloaded a pre-patched kernel. Is there a way to reinstall that?

Danke

The old kernel should still be there so you could still boot to that. I've never used a mac, but if you get a menu like grub on a windows/linux machine, you can chose from the installed kernels at boot time.
